Welcome to WordLookup, a lightweight, lightning-fast utility for Windows that gives you a beautiful macOS-style dictionary popup anywhere on your screen!
Because this application uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read the words straight off your screen, the necessary OCR components have been completely bundled inside! No extra downloads required.
- Extract the WordLookup folder you received to anywhere on your computer (like your Documents or Desktop).
- Inside, open the
distfolder, then open theWordLookupfolder. - Double-click
WordLookup.exeto run it.
(Tip: You can right-click WordLookup.exe and select "Create Shortcut", then drag that shortcut to your desktop for easy access. To have it start automatically on boot, just right-click its custom icon in the system tray and check "Run on Startup"!)
Once it's running, WordLookup sits silently in your system tray (the small icons near your clock on the bottom right of the screen).
Whenever you are reading an article on Chrome, viewing a PDF, or reading code in a text editor, simply Double-Click on any English word.
- A sleek, dark-themed dictionary popup will instantly appear near your cursor.
- It will display the pronunciation, meaning, synonyms, and an example sentence.
- If you move your mouse into the popup, it stays open so you can read it comfortably.
- Click the Speaker icon (🔊) to hear the word pronounced out loud!
- As soon as you move your mouse away from the popup, it gracefully fades away.
WordLookup comes packed with a bundled 100,000+ word dictionary. If you are ever disconnected from the internet, the app will instantly fall back to its internal dictionary database so you can still read the definitions!
If you want to control the background behavior of the app:

Right-click the WordLookup Icon in your system tray.

Click "Run on Startup" to have the app automatically launch silently in the background whenever you turn on your computer.

Click "Disable Lookup" if you are playing a game and want to temporarily pause the double-click behavior. You can turn it back on by clicking "Enable Lookup".

Click "Exit" to close the program entirely.
