GarbageX — Water-Body Waste Removal Device

Concept Design · Fusion 360 · NIT Trichy · 🏆 Runner-up / 50 teams

A vessel-mounted mechanism for collecting floating solid waste from water bodies using a regenerative adhesive belt system. Designed and documented within a 24-hour competition window at NIT Trichy's Prodigy Design Competition.

Problem Statement

Floating solid waste in lakes, rivers, and coastal waters causes severe environmental and ecological damage. Existing solutions (modified fishing nets, manual collection boats) are labor-intensive, slow, and impractical at scale.

GarbageX proposes a passive-mount, power-assisted solution retrofittable to any existing vessel.

How It Works

  1. Adhesive Belt — A continuous belt coated with waterproof adhesive faces the water surface at the bow
  2. Collection — As the vessel moves forward, floating waste contacts the belt and sticks to it
  3. Scraper — A blade removes collected waste from the belt without stripping the adhesive
  4. Waste Bin — Scraped waste falls into a collection container below
  5. Adhesive Replenishment — A sprayer nozzle recoats the belt continuously
  6. Belt Drive — Electric motor powers the belt via a roller system

Competitive Advantage

Feature Fishing Net GarbageX
Continuous operation ❌ Requires stops ✅ Continuous
Vessel retrofit ❌ Specialized vessel ✅ Any vessel
Fine particle collection ❌ Poor ✅ Adhesive captures small particles
