MPEE — Offline route calculations and optimization

One Rust engine that replaces the OSRM + VROOM stack — and equally the OSRM + PyVRP, OSRM + OR-Tools, Valhalla + VROOM, GraphHopper + OR-Tools, or Google Distance Matrix + OR-Tools router-plus-solver combos: routing and vehicle-routing optimization in a single process, sharing memory directly. Download one area once, then route, optimize, and geocode it fully offline.

⚡ A 50,000-customer fleet needs a 50,000 × 50,000 distance matrix — ~10 GB to hold in memory, which is exactly what OSRM + VROOM do. MPEE never materialises it: it streams that matrix through a ~500 MB budget (≈20× less) yet still solves the whole fleet — in 29.5 s where OSRM runs out of RAM, on CPU + GPU.

More than a solver — a platform for optimization. MPEE is programmable and data-aware at every layer, not just a black-box solver you call: constraints and costs written as code (PySpell — Rust/Python expressions compiled to a sandboxed native AST, run in the hot loop), lossless compression of external matrices (matcodec — bring a matrix from anywhere, store it 7–10× smaller, stream it bigger than RAM, random-access it compressed), and a cost-aware matrix broker that buys only the cells the solver reads from a paid API, derives the rest, caches them so the same cell is never bought twice, and learns one day of live traffic to replay offline — turning a recurring per-call matrix bill into a one-time skeleton (often ≈ $0 per later run). You assemble an optimizer for your problem.

How it compares (measured, Apple M3 Pro)

A 50,000-customer fleet implies a 50,000 × 50,000 distance matrix — ~10 GB if you store it. The classic OSRM + VROOM split builds and ships that matrix between two processes; MPEE streams it in one process and never materialises it, which is where the speed and memory wins come from.

Optimisation — VRP solver · brooom vs PyVRP / VROOM / OR-Tools, Solomon-style

Self-reported — independent validation welcome. All numbers above are measured on one machine (Apple M3 Pro) and have not been independently verified. On raw solution quality we now edge ahead of PyVRP (HGS-class SOTA) on small-N R2/RC2 (mean −0.14 %, at-or-below on 15/19) and beat the field at N≥1000; our added edge is the integrated single-engine stack, memory/scale, and speed. Every benchmark is built to re-run on the same instances/budget through every solver — see crates/brooom/benchmarks (seeded real-map generator + 4-way harness) and the honest gap analysis in benchmarks/results/.

Scope: MPEE covers a single downloaded area — it isn't a route-anywhere-on-Earth offline map. Pick the OSM extract that matches your operating area; the cache scales with it (a city ≈ tens of MB, a whole country ≈ GBs). There's no global tiling, by design — within your area, one cache is simpler and faster.

Where MPEE fits

An engine, not a service. The usual knock on MPEE is "great router and solver, but no global coverage." That's backwards: MPEE gives you anywhere two complementary ways, self-hosted, no per-call API, your data stays put — (1) route offline from OpenStreetMap — the whole planet is an OSM extract, dijeng builds the routable cache, brooom solves; or (2) bring your own matrix computed anywhere (a commercial API, an internal system, another OSRM) — brooom ingests it directly and matcodec compresses/validates it without the router. The router becomes central at planet scale: it feeds the compressor row by row, so a matrix larger than RAM is streamed and compressed without ever materialising n² (compute → stream → compress → solve). Nobody else packages lossless matrix compression (7–10× on real roads), bigger-than-RAM streaming, compressed random-access, matrix validation, a SOTA solver, and an offline router in one engine.

  • State-of-the-art quality. On small-N CVRPTW (Solomon R2/RC2), same-harness 10 s, MPEE now edges ahead of PyVRP (HGS-class, the SOTA open reference) at mean −0.14 %, at-or-below it on 15/19 instances (7 wins, 8 exact ties). Of the open solvers we benchmarked, MPEE is the only one that reaches PyVRP — VROOM and OR-Tools trail it (OR-Tools sometimes can't even find a feasible plan in budget).
  • Wins on end-to-end time and scale. One process does routing and optimization, streaming the matrix instead of materialising ~10 GB — so the total wall-clock (matrix + solve) beats the OSRM+VROOM split, and it keeps going where they OOM (50 k on a laptop). At N ≥ 1,000 it beats the field on solution quality too.
  • Paid matrix? Buy almost none of it. If your travel times come from a per-call API (Google Distance Matrix, a metered OSRM), the cost-aware matrix broker buys only the thin skeleton the solver actually reads, derives the long-range rest, and reuses a local DB so the same cell is never bought twice (warm DB → zero buys next run). Temporal profiles take it further: learn one representative day of live traffic, then replay it offline for every similar day — congestion and uncertainty baked into the matrix so the solver routes around the queues. Offline by default; a few paid cells only when reality demands it. (docs)
  • No manual zoning — feed it the whole fleet. The usual way to make large VRP tractable is to hand-carve the area into territories/groupings and solve each separately, then stitch. MPEE doesn't ask for that: it auto-decomposes internally (cluster-first for large N) and re-polishes across cluster boundaries, so you submit the entire problem and get one optimized plan — no pre-clustering, no per-zone glue.
  • Graceful degradation, not a dead "infeasible". When no plan can hit every time window, a hard solver (e.g. PyVRP) just returns infeasible. With soft time windows (auto-on when the problem has windows) MPEE still serves everyone and reports exactly which stops are late and by how muchsummary.time_warp, late_jobs, max_lateness, and a per-job late[] list (id, arrival, due, lateness). A dispatcher gets an actionable best-effort plan with the violations made visible, not a dead end. Fully on-time plans report nothing extra (byte-identical to before).

Constraints

"Vroom-compatible" undersells what the solver actually enforces. brooom ships the whole standard VRP constraint set out of the box — everything VROOM does, plus driver breaks, backhaul and multi-depot — all checked in one evaluator (crates/brooom/src/solution.rs) and proven by a conformance suite you can run yourself: cargo test -p brooom --test constraints.

With per-route custom constraints (pyspell), cross-route built-ins (max-vehicles, client-groups, fairness), an arbitrary solution-level hook, an N-level lexicographic objective, and custom accumulator dimensions (OR-Tools-style RoutingDimensions with a per-arc transit, soft bounds, and proactive pruning), MPEE covers the full standard VRP feature set plus code-defined constraints and objectives — in one streaming Rust process with no separate matrix step. Every row above is reachable from Rust, Python, an HTTP API, the CLI, and pure JSON (see Choosing a surface). The one genuine remaining edge — CP-SAT-class general constraint programming (bidirectional domain propagation) — is structurally outside a local-search solver; MPEE ships an honest interop bridge that exports a propagation-hard instance to OR-Tools CP-SAT and feeds the answer back as a warm start, rather than pretending to reimplement it.

Custom constraints in code

Need a rule the built-ins don't cover? Register a closure (Rust) or a callable (Python) that the solver runs on every completed route. Return Infeasible to reject it outright, or Penalty(x) to make it a soft constraint the search weighs against cost. Because every accepted route passes through the same evaluator, your rule genuinely shapes the search — not just a post-hoc filter.

Constraints live in a process-global registry, so they're scoped to one solve at a time. The ConstraintGuard clears them on drop; if you run solves concurrently in one process (or across tests), serialize them.

The callback returns False/Infeasible (reject), a number (penalty added to the route's cost), or None/True/Feasible (ok). Registering any custom constraint keeps the solve on the CPU evaluator (the GPU megakernel can't run arbitrary code). Proven by crates/brooom/tests/custom_constraints.rs.

…or as a sandboxed DSL string (compiled to native code)

A Python callback re-acquires the GIL on every route, so it only runs at the end of each evaluation. Write the rule as a string instead and it is parsed (Rust or Python expression syntax), lowered once to a tiny IR, and run natively in the optimization loop — no GIL, deterministic, sandboxed (no I/O, no imports, just a fixed route schema + pure builtins, with an instruction budget). Field-only hard bounds are even mirrored into the O(1) insertion probe, so they prune candidates before full evaluation.

Schema (all times in seconds, distances in metres): route.{travel_time, service_time, waiting_time, setup_time, start_time, end_time, distance, cost, duration, stop_count, job_ids}, vehicle.{id, capacity, max_tasks, fixed, per_hour}; builtins len, abs, min, max, sum, any, all, round, int, float, bool (+ contains / in) — no other calls, imports, or I/O are allowed. A bool result is feasible/infeasible; a number > 0 is a soft penalty (<= 0 is feasible). Python chained comparisons (0 < route.travel_time < 28800) work; the Rust form also accepts let bindings before the final expression (let d = route.end_time - route.start_time; d <= 3600). A bad string is reported as a compile error before any solve — never a panic (in Python it's raised as RuntimeError). Feature-gated (pyspell for Rust syntax, pyspell-python adds Python); the default build pulls no new crates. Precedence/sequencing uses the index/before/first/last builtins over route.job_ids (visiting order), e.g. !route.job_ids.contains(10) || before(route.job_ids, 10, 20) ("if both are on this route, 10 before 20"). Proven by crates/brooom/tests/pyspell_constraints.rs; design in crates/brooom/docs/pyspell-design.md.

Beyond the per-route hook, these are first-class — set a field or a solve knob:

The built-in cross-route constraints (max-vehicles, client-groups, fairness) ride on a solution-level hook (brooom::global_constraint); a custom Rust/Python global is the escape hatch for anything else. Multi-trip and any global keep the solve on the CPU evaluator.

Soft time windows / capacity / duration (serve late, don't drop)

OR-Tools-style soft bounds: rather than dropping a stop that can't be served inside its window (or that would overload a vehicle, or overrun the shift), serve it and charge λ × violation. Turn it on with soft_tw (Python router.solve(..., soft_tw=True), CLI --soft-tw, JSON "options": {"soft_time_windows": true}). It auto-enables whenever a problem has job time windows, and --no-soft-tw forces it off.

λ is fixed and high (≈1000× the per-second travel cost, far below the drop prize), so the behaviour is a strict improvement:

  • On a feasible instance no violation ever lowers the cost, so the result is byte-identical to the hard solve (verified across Solomon C/R/RC — 0.00% delta, see benchmarks/results/soft_tw_ab.md).
  • On an over-constrained instance it serves the stops that hard mode would abandon, paying a small lateness penalty instead of the (far larger) drop cost — e.g. a tightened Solomon r101 goes from 2 dropped stops to 0, at 5.3× lower objective.

Structural constraints stay hard even in soft mode (skills, precedence, pickup-before-delivery, reachability, max-distance). Proven by crates/brooom/tests/soft_penalty.rs.

Lexicographic objective (true N-level, not weighted)

Optimise objectives in strict priority order — minimise the first; among the solutions that achieve it, minimise the second; and so on. This is a real two-phase-per-level search (each level pins its achieved value as a hard cap for the next, warm-starting from the previous level), not a weighted sum. Levels: vehicles, unassigned, cost, makespan, distance.

The default is scalar (single weighted cost) — byte-identical to before when no objective is set. It is best-effort lexicographic: each level's pinned value is the metaheuristic's best, not a proven optimum.

Custom accumulator dimensions (OR-Tools-style RoutingDimension)

Track a quantity that accumulates along each route — fuel, a cooling budget, a custom resource — with a per-arc transit written as a sandboxed pyspell expression over the arc (distance, duration, cumul). Declare a min/max (hard) or soft_max/soft_min + soft_weight (penalty), and a monotonicity so the bound prunes inside the search:

A non_increasing dimension with a min (or non_decreasing with a max) is mirrored into the O(1) insertion probe, so a refuelling-impossible insertion is pruned before full evaluation. Soft bounds add a penalty to the route cost instead of rejecting. From Rust, build brooom::dimension::CustomDimension with .draining() / .monotone() / .with_min() / .soft_max() and a native closure, or compile the same expression with brooom::pyspell.

When you actually need constraint programming (CP-SAT bridge)

A few instances are propagation-hard — tightly-coupled time windows where greedy

  • local-search gets stuck and you need a solver that reasons bidirectionally over the constraint store. That is structurally outside a local-search VRP engine. Rather than fake it, MPEE ships an honest interop bridge (tools/cpsat_bridge/): export the brooom problem to an OR-Tools CP-SAT model, solve the hard sub-instance, and round-trip the exact tour back as a --warm-start for brooom to polish with the full constraint set. Covers multi-depot, multi-dimensional capacity, skills, multiple time windows, pickup & delivery, priority and groups; refuses anything outside that subset loudly. It stays offline tooling — never wired into the hot path.

JSON field shapes & notes. Per-job time_windows is a list of [start,end] (seconds), e.g. "time_windows": [[0,3600],[7200,9000]]; a vehicle's shift is the singular "time_window": [start,end]. A break is {"id":1, "service":1800, "time_windows":[[s,e]]}. prize defaults to a large sentinel (1e9) so unset jobs are mandatory — an optional job needs a finite prize well below that. Declaring any job group auto-enforces "exactly one per group" (no manual hook). When reading a Solution in Rust, a route exposes vehicle_idx (index into problem.vehicles), not the id — use problem.vehicles[r.vehicle_idx].id; per-stop arrival/waiting times come from brooom::io::to_output(&problem, &solution, Some(&matrix)). Native paired shipments (PDPTW) work in the Rust core; the Python Router.solve binding currently needs each half modelled as a job (it errors rather than dropping a shipment).

Choosing a surface

MPEE is a Rust engine, not a Python library. Everything — routing, the matrix stream, the VRP solver, every constraint and objective above — lives in the brooom / dijeng Rust crates. Python, the CLI, and the JSON options block are all thin surfaces over that same core; pick whichever fits how you ship, with zero feature difference between them:

The Python package is PyO3 bindings compiled from the Rust crate — it runs the exact same native solver, not a reimplementation. The same is true of the WebAssembly demo, the CLI, and the HTTP API. So "is this only for Python?" — no: Python is one of five equal front doors to one Rust engine.

The quickest way to start is the mpee Python package — but it's a thin CLI and library over the same Rust core, not a separate implementation:

Heads-up: there are two CLIs, both named mpee. The commands above are the pip package (pip install mpee → verbs route / optimize / reverse / geocode / crossing / download / build). The Rust workspace binary (cargo run -p mpee-cli, i.e. ./target/release/mpee-cli) is a different tool with VRP-focused verbs (gen / route / reverse / geocode / crossing / download / build / solve / pipeline). They take different inputs (e.g. mpee-cli solve reads VROOM JSON; the pip CLI takes --stops). Use the pip package for the examples on this page.

Both engines are standalone Rust projects (each with its own Cargo.toml, its own binaries, its own tests) and can be run completely independently. mpee wraps them as workspace members so a third crate, mpee-cli, can use both library APIs in the same address space — no IPC, no file hand-off on the hot path.

Note on the folder name: the routing crate lives in crates/dijeng/ after Edsger W. Dijkstra. The earlier spelling dikstra was a typo. The Cargo crate name itself is still dijeng (the original standalone-project name).


Vision: built for today's fleets, rigged for transfer-at-speed

MPEE solves today's delivery and field-service routing — but the engine is deliberately built for a future of autonomous cars, buses, trains and boats with seamless transitions: ride from A to Å with a car's door-to-door convenience at a bus's cost-efficiency, enabled by transferring between vehicles at speed. A hundred individual cars can never economically compete with one trunk vehicle covering 95 % of the distance without a single stop — pods handle only the last mile, docking without anyone stopping. On the water the same logic is even stronger: a hydrofoil's expensive moment is coming down off its foils, so the big foil should never stop — feeder boats dock with it while both are foiling (up and down the Oslofjord, along coastlines), and interface with pods/buses at dedicated quays. Every one of those moving rendezvous is a routing constraint two orders of magnitude tighter than a delivery slot, replanned continuously at fleet scale — which is exactly why a single-process engine with fleet-sized matrices in seconds, SOTA solve quality per second, and a live-updatable hierarchy matters. Route optimization is the load-bearing piece that enables this. Full write-up: docs/future-vision.md.


Background

Both dijeng and brooom were recently optimised to compute distances on the fly rather than precomputing the entire N×N matrix:

  • dijeng has bucket-based many-to-many MMM that streams rows, granular K-NN (K=160 → 92 MB instead of 20 GB for 50k customers), and 20 µs single-pair CH distance queries.
  • brooom's local-search loop reads only K-nearest neighbours on the hot path and falls back to single-pair queries for route evaluation — so the full matrix is never required.

Together they make it possible to solve a 50 000-customer VRP on a laptop without ever materialising a full distance matrix.

Matrix compression — bring your own matrix, compress it losslessly

When you do have a matrix computed elsewhere (for a whole country, or the rest of the world), crates/matcodec/ stores it losslessly and far smaller than a general compressor, by exploiting the structure a road network leaves in the numbers — between two regions connected by few roads, the cross-block is min-plus low rank. It picks best-of two models per matrix (1 header byte, always an exact roundtrip):

  • cluster — k-medoids regions, off-diagonal blocks as a rank-1 base + exact residual. Wins on block-structured road nets.
  • bridge — pivot-mined landmarks (greedy facility location that converges on the actual gateway points), base(i,j) = minₗ d(i,l)+d(l,j) + exact residual. Wins on smooth metrics.

Measured (exact roundtrip, vs raw int32; plain gzip ≈ 2×):

More geographic separation ⇒ better ratio (the 960² road matrix hits 9.79×); compress is sub-second to ~1 s for ~1 M cells and decompression is essentially free (~10 ms), so you can decompress on the fly.

It also streams (compress_stream_hub + the MTZU container, fed by any RowSource — e.g. dijeng's per-row CH queries, so a matrix larger than RAM is compressed without ever materialising n²) and validates every row as it passes (negative / unreachable / non-zero-diagonal cells, plus a free triangle-inequality check — a positive residual is a violation — that auto-gates the metric-only shortcuts).

The streamed container doubles as an in-memory query index (design + measurements): each point keeps directional path labels — the k hubs that actually lie on its shortest paths (mined from sampled pairs; the road-hierarchy "few motorway exits per point" idea) — plus a dense hub matrix and per-(row, region) max-residual bytes, with varint-coded residual frames. MtzReader answers index-exact cells with zero decompression, gives every cell ~180 ns lower/upper bounds (cell_bounds, built for solver pruning) and tolerance-bounded values (cell_within). Measured on real London CH matrices: a streamed 10k² matrix compresses to 52.9 MB (7.6×; was 121.8 MB), random-accesses from a 3 MB resident index (open: 10 ms), exact cell() 50 µs, cell_within(5 s) 31 µs, and 43 % of blocks answer within 5 s straight from the index. Cost-aware matrix broker — pay only for the cells you use

The money story. A 400-stop run is an = 160,000-element matrix. At a typical per-element API price ($5 / 1,000 elements, illustrative) that's **$800 bought naively — every solve**. Re-plan daily and it's ~$24,000/quarter. The broker buys only the skeleton the solver reads (<50 %, often far less), so the first run is a fraction of that, and every later run is ≈ $0: a warm local DB never buys the same cell twice, and a temporal profile learned on one workday is replayed offline for every similar day. You pay once; you reuse forever.

The flip side of compressing a matrix you already have is not buying one you don't. When the matrix has to come from a paid/metered provider (Google Distance Matrix, a billed OSRM, an internal endpoint), a full N×N is wasteful: the solver only ever reads each stop's nearest neighbours plus the depot and a few landmarks. The broker ranks candidates with a free Haversine prior, buys only that skeleton exactly (no quality loss on what the search touches), derives the long-range rest with the same min-plus bridge matcodec uses, and caches in a local DB — so a warm DB buys zero cells the second run, and the same cell is never bought twice. A PySpell broker.* spell prices the buy; --buy-budget caps the spend (search-critical cells survive, the rest are derived).

Time-of-day, learned once, replayed offline. Key the cache by a (weekday-class, hour) window and the broker stores a running mean + variance per cell. Fetch one representative workday's hourly cells and — because the key is a weekday class, not a date — that profile answers every weekday at that hour with no new calls. The variance is the uncertainty: with --uncertainty-weight W the matrix cell becomes mean + W·std, so flaky, queue-prone arcs cost more and the solver routes around them. Provider-agnostic (Google is an example, not a dependency); pairs naturally with a compressed offline graph as the free base plus a thin paid "delay" overlay. Absent --broker, routing is byte-for-byte unchanged.

Getting started

Requirements

  • Stable Rust (tested with 1.76+).
  • For the brooom GPU path: a wgpu-supported GPU (Metal on Mac, Vulkan on Linux, DX12 on Windows).

ONNX is not pulled by default. brooom's experimental neural module (and its ~200 MB ort runtime) is opt-in — only --features neural / --features full builds it. A plain cargo build --workspace, -p mpee-cli, or pip install mpee downloads no ONNX. Routing/VRP need none of it.

Build caches with mpee build (or the pip mpee build) — not with bench_pp / bench_ch. Those are benchmark tools: they write the cache and then run a long SSSP/Dijkstra benchmark suite (100 s+) that has nothing to do with building it. mpee build runs the build-only pipeline in-process.

Quick check: does the cache route? (route)

A one-shot point-to-point sanity check (no JSON needed) — input is LAT,LON:

A big "snap" distance (it warns past 500 m) means the point is off the map or you swapped lat,lon — a fast way to catch input mistakes.

mpee-cli solve runs a VROOM-style problem against a CH cache. A minimal one ships at examples/problem.json:

Per-vehicle capacity / skills / time_window / speed_factor / max_travel_time / max_distance / max_tasks / breaks and per-job delivery / pickup (a pickup-only job is a backhaul, served after every linehaul) / skills / time_windows / service / setup / priority are all honoured — each backed by a test in crates/brooom/tests/constraints.rs. Multi-depot needs no special flag: give each vehicle its own start / end. See the Constraints matrix above.

Status

  • dijeng: production-ready routing — CH build, K-NN in 1.2 s for 50k customers, OSRM-compatible HTTP server (bench_osrm, serve), correctness verified against full Dijeng. See crates/dijeng/README.md.

  • brooom: VRP solver. Beats PyVRP / Vroom / OR-Tools at large N (Solomon R1-1000, p ≈ 3·10⁻⁸); edges ahead of PyVRP at small N (mean −0.14 % on R2/RC2, at-or-below on 15/19; beats it on tight-window rc101) via O(1) local search + SREX/OX population HGS with incremental Split. Vroom-compatible I/O. See crates/brooom/README.md.

  • mpee-cli: end-to-end VRP pipeline. The download / build / solve / pipeline subcommands load a CH cache via dijeng, snap random / supplied coords to the road graph, build the N×N duration+distance matrix with dijeng's bucket-MMM, and hand the matrix straight to brooom's solver — all in the same address space, no IPC, no disk on the hot path.

  • mpee-viz: live HTTP server (port 8032 by default) that runs the same pipeline and then serves the result over an embedded Leaflet-based mobile UI. Designed so a phone on the same network can load http://<laptop-ip>:8032/, see every route colour-coded on a map, tap a stop for job_id / vehicle_id / stop_order, and zoom to any vehicle's bounding box. See crates/mpee-viz/README.md for build instructions and the measured 2 000 / 5 000-job runs over Greater London.

Both runs ship a 99 %+ assignment rate. The 1 % dropped are random points that snapped to road fragments isolated from the depot (parks, gated roads, pedestrian-only paths). Real address inputs do not have this issue.
