In the dark, sound is life. Sound is also death.
Hollowecho is a tense, atmospheric survival game about a lone bat fighting to escape a cave that has become a killing ground. There is no light here — only sound. To see, you must be heard. To be heard is to be hunted.
The cave was once a sanctuary — a labyrinth of tunnels shared by an entire colony of bats living in the dark by choice, guided by echolocation and instinct. That changed when one of them turned.
The Hollow (working name for the predator) was once an ordinary bat. Something in the deep tunnels corrupted it — age, hunger, or something older than either. It no longer echolocates to see. It echolocates to find. It has developed a taste for its own kind, hunting the colony tunnel by tunnel until the warren fell silent.
You are one of the last survivors. The cave itself is your enemy as much as the predator is — narrow passages, dead ends, sheer drops — and you can't see any of it unless you risk revealing exactly where you are.
Core tension: every tool you have to survive the cave is also a signal to the thing hunting you.
The bat cannot see in the dark. Emitting a sound wave briefly illuminates the surrounding path — walls, ledges, hazards, the way forward.
- Short-lived: the reveal fades quickly, forcing you to move with memory and instinct.
- Risky: every pulse ripples outward and can alert the predator to your general location. The closer the predator, the more dangerous a pulse becomes.
- Up — climb / fly upward through vertical passages
- Down — dive / drop through lower tunnels
- Space — emit an echolocation pulse to reveal the path ahead
When cornered, real bats screech to startle and disorient a threat. In Hollowecho, this is your emergency defense:
- Used only in close-range, high-danger encounters.
- Briefly disorients the predator, buying a few seconds to escape a dead-end or reroute.
- Not a weapon — a stall tactic. It doesn't hurt the predator, it just interrupts it.
A louder, more desperate cousin of the screech. The scream is your last line of defense against losing everything:
- Used when the predator is close enough that death (and loss of progress) is imminent.
- Actively deters the predator, forcing it to briefly retreat or hesitate.
- Comes at a cost — likely a resource, cooldown, or trade-off (e.g., it draws in other threats, or leaves you unable to echolocate for a short time afterward) so it can't be spammed as a free save.
The game's core loop is a constant risk/reward decision:
- Move blind through memorized or partially-revealed paths (safe, but slow and error-prone).
- Pulse to reveal the path (necessary, but exposes your position).
- Get hunted as the predator reacts to your sound.
- Corner encounter — screech to disorient and slip away.
- Near-death encounter — scream to deter the predator and protect your progress.
Every choice trades information for exposure. The player is never fully safe and never fully blind — just balancing how much of each they can survive.
