Milestones

  • High-level overview: At this point in development of the package, we are focusing on maintenance and long term planning. We want to answer questions of what are our scientists doing with their reports and other materials after the assessment is completed and how might their workflows be impacted during the next assessment cycle as {asar} evolved? We plan to address backwards compatibility of the package this month along with finding the best methods of storing the report, model results, and other files created during the assessment process. Detailed overview: * Review the function `create_template()` * Develop a plan/guidance for archiving reports and associated materials * Plan and develop a function that will; check for changes from previous versions of asar and update the template

    Due by December 30, 2026
  • High-level overview: Our priority this month is building and releasing a new feature that links our package's bibliography file to the {journals} package. This will provide every commonly referenced journal's citations at our scientist's fingertips. We will also work with the SIS team and NOAA library to pull together references for all previous stock assessment reports so those are also more easily referenced during report writing. Detailed overview: * Link our .bib file to the {journals} package * Expand .bib file to include all assessment references in SIS

    Due by August 31, 2026
  • High-level overview: Little developments are planned for {asar} for the month of July in order to prioritize {stockplotr} development. We will get started on outlining a paper to submit our package to the Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS). Detailed overview: * Write outline of a short paper on the {asar} package to be submitted to JOSS * [potential] separate `rerender_skeleton` from `create_template()`

  • High-level overview: The general theme for June is minor tweaks and additions to documentation for long term maintenance and contribution. We plan to create a template GitHub repository to start the basis of an automated pipeline and ideal automated workflow in the cloud. In addition, automated checks and more options in current asar function features will provide more flexibility of the tool to users. These changes will mainly be back-end development heavy with high reward and ease of use on the user front. README file, files that are readable and contain information, will be added to each folder so people navigating the repository are able to identify the reason for each folder and what is in them. Detailed overview: * Create a template repository for general structure and organization of stock assessment files * Add automatic checks in `create_figures_doc()` and `create_tables_doc()` to identify duplicate tables/figures * Add the option to update a species image when rerender=T * Create README files for each folder * Investigate title issue identified by NOAA A11Y experts and add proper formatting for tagging * Update {asar} tutorial * Link the updated CONTRIBUTOR.md file to the workflow guide book

  • High-level overview: One of our biggest and most needed features is planned for development and release this month. We will provide users with the ability to call their last assessment report and automatically make updates to the report for the current assessment cycle. This will have enormous impacts to their workflow by improving efficiency and reducing human error. We will also be expanding the executive summary by adding automated tables and figures. This will also expand our automation of reports and build upon the current foundation of {asar}. These features along with the expansion of our testing framework will build a more robust package. We also plan to write the first draft of the paper we plan to submit to JOSS on {asar}. This paper would provide a DOI along with a small accreditation to the package. Detailed overview: * add feature to call previous report * Incorporate executive summary figures and tables into template * add more tests for rerender = TRUE * Write paper for JOSS based on earlier outline
