FAQ

General

Q: Is AI Tutor free? A: Yes, all features are currently free to use.

Q: What subjects does it support? A: Currently, it supports the Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) textbook. More subjects (Calculus, Linear Algebra, etc.) are planned.

Q: Do I need to create an account? A: No. You can use all features without signing in. Sign in with Google if you want to save chat history and sync progress across devices.

Learning Mode

Q: The AI matched the wrong textbook section. What do I do? A: Just tell it in the chat, e.g., "I want section 5.2, not 5.1." The AI will correct itself.

Q: Can I upload photos of my handwritten work? A: Yes. Click the attachment icon in the chat input, select your image files, and send. The AI can read handwritten math.

Q: Can I upload a PDF? A: Yes, up to 14 MB. Click the attachment icon and select a PDF file.

Q: Where is my chat history? A: If you're signed in, the sidebar on the left of Learning Mode shows all your past conversations. If you're not signed in, chat history is not saved.

Q: The textbook panel on the left is empty. A: It appears after the AI matches a topic. Answer the 3 diagnostic questions first, and the panel will populate with textbook reference pages.

Auto Grader

Auto Grader is still in active development. Answers below describe the current interface — grading behavior and output format are likely to change.

Q: What can I submit for grading? A: Two PDFs — one with the question (or problem set) and one with your answer. If your answer is on paper, scan or photograph the pages and combine them into a single PDF first.

Q: Can I paste text or upload a single image? A: Not in the current Auto Grader form. The form accepts PDF files only. If you have a typed answer, export it to PDF first.

Q: How accurate is the grading? A: Accuracy is still being tuned — the feature is in active development. Treat any output as a study aid rather than a final grade, and don't rely on it as a substitute for your instructor.

Q: When will Auto Grader be fully ready? A: No firm date yet. We'll post example output and more detailed guidance on this wiki once grading behavior stabilizes.

Learning progress

(Progress tracking used to be a standalone page called My Learning Bar. It's now the Learning progress panel on the left of Learning Mode.)

Q: My progress disappeared on a new device. A: Sign in with the same Google account. If you were previously signed in when you saved progress, it will sync from the server.

Q: I marked a chapter as learned by accident. A: Click it again to toggle it back to "not learned." For chapters with subsections, clicking the chapter heading toggles all subsections at once.

Technical Issues

Q: The page shows a white screen. A: Try refreshing the page. If the issue persists, open the browser console (F12 → Console) and share any red error messages with the team.

Q: Chat responses are slow. A: The backend runs on a free-tier server that may take 30-60 seconds to wake up after being idle. Subsequent responses should be faster.

Q: I see "could not reach the server" in the Learning progress panel. A: Your progress is saved locally in the meantime and will sync when the server is available again. The backend may be starting up — wait a minute and try again.
