It's Not the Right Blue - Matching Physical Colors on Digital Screens

Contained in this repository is the data related to the MobileCHI'26 peer-reviewed scientific publication, as well as the Jupyter notebook used for the analysis. We hope future work will directly build on this and use the data e.g. to develop predictive models to correct pictures on mobile devices. The contents of this repository is licensed under MIT.

Abstract

Individual perception of colors is an important, often overlooked, issue when recreating or finding colors. Few studies have tackled this problem, and fewer studies have examined recreating a physical color onto a digital device. The conversion of color from physical to digital, or vise versa, is complicated. Digital displays create colors in a manner physically different from, say, prints on paper or colors on textiles and do not necessarily represent these colors correctly. To better understand this difference and overcome potential mismatches, we conducted a study with 50 participants where they were tasked to recreate 22 physical colors, twice, on an iPhone to investigate how close colors can be recreated on the digital device from the ground truth of the physical colors. Our prior assumption was that users would recreate colors normally distributed around the ground truth, but our study showed that participants generally recreated the digital colors lighter than the physical counterparts.
