Python 3.8+ Textual TUI Hashcat Version

hashCrack

A modern Textual TUI around hashcat for running wordlist, rule, brute-force and combinator attacks with structured JSON logging and full keyboard-driven navigation.

Caution

For authorized security testing, CTFs and educational use only. Always obtain explicit permission before assessing any system you do not own.

Highlights

  • Modern TUI — reactive dashboard built on Textual; arrow-key / single-key navigation, modal forms, live hashcat output in a RichLog.
  • Four attack backends-a 0 wordlist, -a 0 -r rules, -a 3 brute-force (mask + increment), -a 6 combinator.
  • Structured logs — every run persists a status.json (machine-readable), the raw hashcat.log, plaintext.txt and the exact command.txt for replay.
  • Legacy menu fallback--classic keeps the original rich-rendered menu for environments where Textual cannot render.
  • Non-interactive mode--attack <type> plus --force for scripting.
  • Optional --force — opt-in, both via CLI flag and a Switch in the TUI forms.
  • Cross-platform — Linux binary path and Windows hashcat.exe path handled separately.

Requirements

Component Notes
Python >= 3.8
pipx Recommended installer — pip install pipx or apt install pipx
hashcat Must be on PATH (or reachable via the configured Windows path)
GPU/CPU Any device hashcat can target; --force bypasses driver warnings when needed

Python dependencies (see requirements.txt, resolved automatically by pipx):

Package Version Purpose
textual >=0.60 Modern TUI framework
rich >=13.0 Rich text rendering
termcolor >=2.0 Colored CLI output
importlib-resources any Backport for Python < 3.9 only

Installation

Note

hashcrack is distributed via pipx only. It is not published on PyPI. Install pipx first if you don't have it: pip install --user pipx && pipx ensurepath

From GitHub (recommended)

pipx install git+https://github.com/ente0/hashCrack.git

From a local checkout

git clone https://github.com/ente0/hashCrack.git
cd hashCrack
pipx install .

To reinstall after pulling new changes:

git pull
pipx install --force .

System packages for hashcat

# Debian / Ubuntu / Kali
sudo apt install hashcat

# Fedora
sudo dnf install hashcat

# Arch / Manjaro
sudo pacman -S hashcat

Usage

Quick start

hashcrack path/to/hashfile

This launches the Textual TUI. Press 1..5 to open an attack form, fill in the inputs, toggle switches with space, and hit Run to stream hashcat output live.

CLI reference

hashcrack HASH_FILE [--os {linux,windows}] [--force] [--attack {wordlist,rule,bruteforce,combo}] [--classic]
Flag Description
HASH_FILE Positional; path to the file containing the hash(es)
--os {linux,windows} Target hashcat flavour. Defaults to platform auto-detection
--force Default --force to on in TUI forms and append it to non-interactive runs
--attack <type> Skip the TUI entirely and run a single attack interactively
--classic Use the legacy rich-rendered text menu instead of Textual

Examples

# Full TUI, auto-detect OS
hashcrack handshake.hc22000

# Force flag pre-enabled on forms (useful for iGPU / non-standard drivers)
hashcrack handshake.hc22000 --force

# Headless single-attack run
hashcrack handshake.hc22000 --attack wordlist --force

# Windows flavour (uses hashcat.exe)
hashcrack hashes.txt --os windows

# Legacy rich-rendered menu
hashcrack hashes.txt --classic

Key bindings (TUI)

Key Action
1 Open Wordlist form
2 Open Wordlist + Rule form
3 Open Brute-force mask form
4 Open Combinator form
5 Open Cracked sessions view
c Clear hashcat potfile
x Toggle target OS (Linux ↔ Windows)
q Quit
esc Cancel modal / go back
ctrl+c Stop the running hashcat process

Output layout

Each run writes to ~/.hashCrack/logs/<session>/:

~/.hashCrack/logs/2026-04-14/
├── plaintext.txt        # raw hashcat --outfile-format=2 output (password only)
├── status.json          # structured run metadata
├── hashcat.log          # full hashcat stdout+stderr stream
└── command.txt          # exact command used (replay)

status.json schema

{
  "session": "2026-04-14",
  "timestamp": "2026-04-14T10:30:00+00:00",
  "status": "cracked",
  "attack": {
    "type": "wordlist",
    "hashmode": "22000",
    "wordlist": "/usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt",

  },
  "plaintext": "password123",
  "command": "hashcat --session=2026-04-14 -m 22000 ..."
}

The Cracked sessions screen (5) reads every status.json under the logs root and aggregates them into a sortable table.

Example hashcat commands

# Wordlist attack
hashcat -a 0 -m 400 example400.hash example.dict

# Wordlist with rules
hashcat -a 0 -m 0 example0.hash example.dict -r best64.rule

# Brute-force
hashcat -a 3 -m 0 example0.hash ?a?a?a?a?a?a

# Combinator attack
hashcat -a 1 -m 0 example0.hash example.dict example.dict

Cracking ZIP archives

Extract the hash from a ZIP file with zip2john:

zip2john filename.zip > hash.txt

Cleaning the $pkzip$ hash line

The line produced by zip2john usually contains extra metadata that hashcat does not expect. Before running, remove:

  • the leading filename prefix (e.g. backup.zip:)
  • the trailing file names after ::, e.g. ::backup.zip:style.css, index.php:backup.zip

Original:

backup.zip:$pkzip$2*1*1*...*$/pkzip$::backup.zip:style.css, index.php:backup.zip

Cleaned:

$pkzip$2*1*1*...*$/pkzip$

Hashcat can only parse the line when the $pkzip$ signature starts at column 0.

Hashcat modes for ZIP archives

Mode Format example Description
-m 13600 $zip2$ WinZip legacy ZipCrypto encryption
-m 17200 $pkzip2$...*$/pkzip2$ (compressed, single file) PKZIP, compressed single-file
-m 17210 $pkzip2$...*$/pkzip2$ (uncompressed, single file) PKZIP, uncompressed single-file
-m 17220 $pkzip2$3*...*$/pkzip2$ PKZIP compressed multi-file archive ✅
-m 17225 $pkzip2$3*...*$/pkzip2$ PKZIP mixed (compressed & uncompressed) multi-file
-m 17230 $pkzip2$8*...*$/pkzip2$ PKZIP mixed multi-file (checksum-only entries)

Important

If your ZIP file contains more than one file inside (e.g., style.css, index.php), use -m 17220.

Tip

On a segmentation fault with a recent hashcat build on -m 17220, fall back to hashcat 6.1.1 — the issue is tracked upstream: https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-9467.html

Session restore

Sessions started from hashCrack are created under hashcat's own session dir (~/.local/share/hashcat/sessions on Linux). The session-name field in each form defaults to today's date; if a name is already taken the tool appends an auto-incrementing suffix.

To resume a hashcat session manually:

hashcat --session=YYYY-MM-DD --restore

Troubleshooting

Symptom Fix
'hashcat' binary not found in PATH Install hashcat system-wide, or adjust the Windows form's hashcat path
OpenCL / driver warnings aborting the run Enable the --force switch in the form, or pass --force on the CLI
TUI looks garbled Use a terminal with true-color and Unicode; fall back to --classic if needed
hash file not found or empty The entry point validates the hash file before launching — double-check the path

Development

git clone https://github.com/ente0/hashCrack.git
cd hashCrack
pipx install .
hashcrack path/to/hash

After every code change, reinstall in place:

pipx install --force .
