Beyond Gatekeepers: the Evolve Network

Knowledge is not held. It is shared.

Beyond Gatekeepers is the community-of-practice pillar of The Purple Movement: a network of monthly, recurring, peer-led meetups called Evolves, where practitioners and learners in a domain gather in person, share what actually works, and grow leaders instead of audiences.

This repository is the open, permanent record of that network: its charters, playbooks, session logs, and governance. If you want to attend an Evolve, start one, or speak at one, everything you need is here.

The lineage: 12 years of proof

Evolve is not an experiment. It is the deliberate succession of FAYA:80, Kerala's longest-running technology meetup:

  • 200+ sessions · 224 speakers · 20,000+ attendees
  • Every month from June 2013 to June 2025, including through the COVID lockdowns, without missing a single month
  • Kochi and Kozhikode chapters, the "Floor of Madness", and a culture where a student's naive question got the same room as a CTO's war story

In June 2025, FAYA:80 closed its Technopark chapter on purpose. Not because it failed, but to decentralise the magic: one centralized series became a network of domain-focused chapters. That network is Evolve.

What is an Evolve?

An Evolve is a domain-focused community of practice with three non-negotiables:

  1. A fixed monthly rhythm. Each chapter picks a recurring slot (e.g. "first Wednesday, every month") and never misses it. Consistency is the product. This is the single deepest lesson of FAYA:80's 12 years.
  2. An emergent leader, not an appointed one. Chapters form when a community leader steps up, picks a location, and commits to the rhythm. Leadership is earned by showing up.
  3. Free and open, forever. No tickets, no gatekeeping, no pay-to-speak. Sponsors may support; they never steer.

The incubation model

Evolve runs like a community incubator, not a franchise. FAYA incubates each new chapter for its first 3–6 months (venue, mentoring, operational muscle), and then the chapter graduates into a self-governing community with its own executive council and team, staying part of the network. HR Evolve is the model's first proof: incubated at FAYA, now self-funded and independent at hrevolve.org. Full lifecycle: GOVERNANCE.md.

How this repository works

Beyond-Gatekeepers/
├── genesis/ # The FAYA:80 record: where this culture comes from
├── chapters/ # One folder per Evolve chapter
│ └── <chapter>/
│ ├── CHARTER.md # Who leads, where, when, and the chapter's focus
│ └── sessions/ # One markdown log per session: the proof of rhythm
├── playbooks/ # How to launch a chapter, host a session, brief a speaker
├── templates/ # Charter + session-log templates
├── STYLE.md # The voice we write in
└── GOVERNANCE.md # How leaders emerge, how we defend the culture

The session log is the heartbeat. Every session gets a markdown file: date, speakers, topics, attendance, learnings. That's how a chapter proves its rhythm, how speakers get permanent public credit, and how the network compounds knowledge instead of losing it. FAYA:80's biggest near-loss was its history living on one website; here, the record is in Git, forkable and forever.

Part of the Purple Movement

The Purple Movement blends the energy of youth (Red) with the wisdom of practitioners (Blue) into Purple, and runs on four connected projects:

Project Role
WikiSyllabus Open repository of university syllabi: the data layer
Beyond Syllabus AI companion to understand your syllabus deeply: the understanding layer
Beyond Borders What to build, plus the global network that backs builders to success: the launchpad layer
Beyond Gatekeepers (this repo) The Evolve meetup network: the community layer where it all meets in person
Techmyrmidons Domain tool radars the Evolve chapters maintain: the mastery layer

μLearn, 48,000+ learners strong, is the movement's peer-learning backbone and the natural home base for Evolve attendees.

Contributing

  • Attend an Evolve. That's contribution zero, and it matters most
  • Log a session. Chapters need scribes as much as speakers
  • Speak. See the Speaker Guide
  • Launch a chapter. See the Launch Playbook
  • Improve the playbooks. Every chapter's learnings should flow back here
