I want to be able to build and run the example without installing the library using root access.
Here are the changes I made to do that.

Played with this idea this evening and ended up pushing different changes (fe4af37) that ensure the python install also works with different install prefixes at configure and install time.
Checkout the updated readme and let me know if that meets your use case. You can either use the new *-nonroot workflow presets, or manually drive cmake with an arbitrary install prefix.
