Environment Setup

  1. Create a .env.local file in the project root:
VITE_GEMINI_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
  1. Get your Gemini API key from Google AI Studio

  2. Important Security Steps:

    • Add HTTP referrer restrictions in Google Cloud Console
    • Restrict to your development domain: http://localhost:5173
    • Restrict to your production domain after deployment
    • Add API restrictions to limit usage to Gemini API only
    • Never commit .env.local to version control (already in .gitignore)
  3. For production deployments:

    • Set VITE_GEMINI_API_KEY environment variable in your hosting platform
    • Consider moving API calls to a backend proxy for better security and billing control

Development

Installation

npm install

Security Notes

⚠️ Client-Side API Key Considerations:

  • The Gemini API key is bundled in the client code when using Vite environment variables
  • This approach is suitable for demos and small projects with API restrictions enabled
  • For production applications with billing concerns:
    • Implement a backend proxy server to handle API calls
    • Keep API keys server-side only
    • Add rate limiting and authentication
  • Always set HTTP referrer restrictions in Google Cloud Console

Emergency Workflow:
