Purpose and background context
This PR performs fairly straight-forward dependecy updates and maintenance.
Note: some testing with harvesting Alma suggested that some fairly substantial changes would be needed for a harveste of that size. That said, it's working great for the current use cases, so this maintenance work is mostly just keeping-things-working-™️ for now.
