Project EQUILIBRIUM

Evidence-based QUalIty Learning Initiative for Better Restorative & Integrated Universal Medicine

License: CC BY-SA 4.0 Status: Active Phase: Development

Mission

To fundamentally restructure medical education and primary care practice to balance pharmaceutical and holistic evidence-based interventions, creating a new generation of physicians equipped to address the root causes of mental health conditions.

The Problem

  • 23% of UK population prescribed antidepressants, yet disability from depression increasing
  • Only 33% of SSRI prescriptions consistent with guidelines
  • 50% of patients discontinue prematurely
  • GPs feel they have no alternatives to prescribing
  • Robust evidence for lifestyle/psychological interventions underutilized

The Solution

10-year comprehensive transformation:

  • Restructure medical education to include holistic evidence-based approaches
  • Reform primary care pathways and payment models
  • Train current practitioners in full range of interventions
  • Rigorous evaluation proving effectiveness and cost-savings

Target Outcomes (Year 10)

  • 50% reduction in inappropriate antidepressant prescribing
  • 40% improvement in long-term mental health outcomes
  • 30% reduction in mental health-related healthcare costs
  • 80% of new medical graduates competent in holistic intervention delivery
