# Forge Protocol Security Audit Report

**Repository:** ElijahUmana/forge-protocol
**Date:** 2026-03-23T06:27:05.965Z
**Agent ID:** 2221 (ERC-8004)

## Findings

### 1. [CRITICAL] Hardcoded API Key Environment Variable Access Without Validation
**File:** `src/lib/agent-engine.ts`
The application accesses process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY directly without validation, and if this environment variable is not set or is empty, it could lead to application crashes or undefined behavior. Additionally, there's no explicit check for the presence of this sensitive credential.
**Fix:** Add validation to ensure ANTHROPIC_API_KEY exists and is non-empty before creating the Anthropic client. Consider using a configuration validation library or explicit checks with meaningful error messages.

### 2. [HIGH] Multiple Next.js CVEs with Medium to High Severity
**File:** `package.json`
The application uses Next.js version 16.2.1 which has several known CVEs including HTTP request smuggling, unbounded disk cache growth, and DoS vulnerabilities. These could lead to service disruption or security bypasses.
**Fix:** Update Next.js to the latest patched version that addresses CVE-2024-34351, CVE-2024-34350, and CVE-2024-34349. Monitor security advisories and establish a process for timely dependency updates.

### 3. [HIGH] NextAuth.js Critical OAuth Authentication Bypass
**File:** `package.json`
The application uses next-auth version 4.24.13 which has a critical CVE for missing proper state, nonce and PKCE checks for OAuth authentication. This could allow attackers to bypass authentication mechanisms.
**Fix:** Immediately update next-auth to version 4.24.16 or later to address the OAuth authentication bypass vulnerability. Review and test all OAuth flows after the upgrade.

### 4. [HIGH] Private Key Environment Variable Without Validation
**File:** `src/lib/erc8004.ts`
The code accesses process.env.AGENT_PRIVATE_KEY without proper validation. If this environment variable is not set, the application will throw an error, but there's no graceful handling or secure fallback mechanism.
**Fix:** Add comprehensive validation for AGENT_PRIVATE_KEY including format validation (proper hex format, correct length), existence check, and consider using a secure key management system instead of environment variables.

### 5. [HIGH] Command Execution with User Input
**File:** `src/lib/agent-engine.ts`
The code imports execSync from child_process and uses it in the agent engine, which could potentially execute arbitrary system commands if user input is not properly sanitized.
**Fix:** Remove execSync import if not needed. If command execution is required, use parameterized commands, validate all inputs, implement allowlisting of permitted commands, and run with minimal privileges.

### 6. [MEDIUM] React and React-DOM XSS Vulnerabilities
**File:** `package.json`
The application uses React versions with known Cross-Site Scripting vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to execute malicious scripts in users' browsers.
**Fix:** Update React and React-DOM to the latest patched versions. Ensure proper input sanitization and avoid dangerouslySetInnerHTML usage throughout the application.

### 7. [MEDIUM] Missing HTTPS Configuration
**File:** `next.config.ts`
The Next.js configuration file is empty and doesn't specify security headers or HTTPS enforcement, which could lead to insecure data transmission.
**Fix:** Add security headers configuration including HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options, and force HTTPS redirects. Configure proper CORS settings and implement security middleware.

### 8. [MEDIUM] Hardcoded RPC URL
**File:** `src/lib/erc8004.ts`
The Ethereum RPC URL is hardcoded in the source code, which makes it difficult to change for different environments and could lead to service disruption if the endpoint becomes unavailable.
**Fix:** Move RPC_URL to environment variables and add fallback mechanisms. Consider using multiple RPC endpoints for redundancy and implement proper error handling for network failures.

### 9. [MEDIUM] Missing Error Handling in Blockchain Operations
**File:** `src/lib/erc8004.ts`
The blockchain interaction functions don't have comprehensive error handling for network failures, insufficient gas, or contract execution failures, which could lead to unhandled exceptions.
**Fix:** Add try-catch blocks around all blockchain operations, implement retry mechanisms for network errors, validate gas estimates, and provide meaningful error messages for different failure scenarios.

### 10. [MEDIUM] Unsafe Eval Pattern in SAST Rules
**File:** `src/lib/sast.ts`
The SAST configuration includes detection for eval() usage but the pattern itself appears in the codebase as part of the security scanning rules, which could trigger false positives.
**Fix:** Consider restructuring the SAST rules to avoid including actual unsafe patterns in the source code. Use string construction or external configuration files for pattern definitions.

### 11. [LOW] Console.log Statement in Production Code
**File:** `src/lib/agent-engine.ts`
There are console.log statements in the codebase that could leak sensitive information in production environments or create unnecessary output.
**Fix:** Remove console.log statements from production code or replace with proper logging framework that can be configured for different environments. Consider using a logger that supports different log levels.

### 12. [LOW] Missing Rate Limiting Configuration
**File:** ``
The application doesn't implement rate limiting for API calls or agent operations, which could lead to resource exhaustion or abuse.
**Fix:** Implement rate limiting middleware for API routes, add request throttling for agent operations, and configure appropriate limits based on user tiers or authentication status.

### 13. [INFO] TypeScript Strict Mode Enabled
**File:** `tsconfig.json`
The TypeScript configuration has strict mode enabled, which is a security best practice that helps catch potential runtime errors at compile time.
**Fix:** Continue maintaining strict TypeScript configuration and consider enabling additional strict flags like noImplicitReturns and noImplicitThis for even better type safety.

### 14. [INFO] ESLint Configuration Present
**File:** `package.json`
The project includes ESLint configuration which helps maintain code quality and can catch potential security issues during development.
**Fix:** Ensure ESLint includes security-focused rules such as eslint-plugin-security and configure pre-commit hooks to enforce linting before code commits.
