A 1-Year Applied Program in Cloud, Automation, and Operational Judgment
Applied Cloud & Platform Engineering is a 1-year, hands-on program designed to teach how real computing systems are built, automated, secured, and operated in the real world. This is not a bootcamp or a certification class. The program focuses on long-term skill development, practical responsibility, and learning how to think clearly when systems fail.
Students work with real infrastructure, real constraints, and real consequences. Throughout the program they build cloud environments, automate deployments, troubleshoot failures, manage access controls, and develop the judgment required to operate production systems responsibly.
The objective is not simply to pass exams or learn tools. The objective is to develop professionals who can understand complex systems, identify risk, and make sound decisions under pressure.
Most programs teach technologies in isolation and assume everything works as expected. This program takes a different approach.
Students learn how systems behave when things do not go according to plan. They practice reading infrastructure plans, interpreting logs, debugging failures, recovering from outages, and making careful decisions when information is incomplete.

Labs are designed to simulate realistic engineering scenarios involving cloud infrastructure, networking, identity management, automation, security, platform operations, and AI-assisted workflows.

Students learn to automate systems using both Bash and Python, beginning with foundational scripting and progressing toward automation workflows used in modern cloud environments. Scripts are used to provision resources, process data, troubleshoot systems, validate deployments, and support operational tasks.
Git and GitOps practices are integrated throughout the program. Students learn how infrastructure and application changes are managed through version control, pull requests, peer review, and automated deployment pipelines. The emphasis is on creating predictable, auditable, and repeatable engineering processes rather than relying on manual changes.
Modern AI tools are introduced as engineering assistants rather than replacements for human judgment. Students work with Claude Sonnet through Amazon Bedrock to perform infrastructure analysis, incident investigation, report generation, documentation support, and controlled Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflows. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the limitations of AI systems, validating outputs, and maintaining clear human accountability for decisions.
Throughout the program, students are taught that automation and AI are most effective when combined with strong operational discipline, sound engineering practices, and careful reasoning.
