Feature request: optimize cancelled requests

If a request is cancelled there are two things we can optimize:
1) if it's cancelled before it's actually written to the network socket, we can skip doing that.
2) if it's cancelled by the time we get a reply, we can skip parsing the reply (though that's a fairly small gain)
