When visiting a modern site (https://www.upwork.com) I get

and the browser seems paused. How can I continue?

Lot of sites have exceptions, and in this case I don't want js errors to be a show stopper.

look for jss-debugger-auto-resume-functions, it's a list of functions (see line jss-debugger.el:215 for an example) of functions which tell jss to automatically resume a js error by returning t. i had used this in the past to ignore errors inside jquery, you'll need to write your own function to figure out if the exception is something you want to skip or not.
