Professor Evans began by presenting recent news about Anthropic. Anthropic has generated lots of headlines recently, with a mix of negative and positive articles.

We began by discussing some of the more negative articles covering recent changes to Anthropic’s safety policy including announcing that they will remove their flagship safety commitment to pause development if their models reach a certain level of risk. Anthropic announced this recently due to their belief that other companies will not responsibly pause, and so Anthropic pausing would only end up hurting the world.

In today’s news section, Table 9 presented an AI dating platform that claims to use artificial intelligence to match singles based on values, lifestyles and political views.

Table 9 started by discussing the concept of a “romantic recession”, which some people argue we might be undergoing at the moment—Americans are marrying less and marrying at later ages, which leads to an older population with fewer children and grandchildren.

Team 6’s news presentation highlighted AI Ads in the Super Bowl. Many of the ads in the Super Bowl involved AI, including ads from major AI companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Amazon/Ring, Meta), completely AI-generated ads from Svedka Vodka and Artlist, an AI toolkit for artists and creators.

The ads reflected different company perspectives and cultures: Anthropic (Claude) conveys their guarantee of safety regulations and responsible scaling; Google displays its commitment to the White House risk-based approach to AI; Meta introduced their AI-supported Meta Glasses in disregard for the EU’s AI safety code of practice; Svedka claimed robots as a reminder to be pro-human; OpenAI’s ad emphasized technological progress and focused on Codex.

Team 5 started class by talking about how the original deal between NVIDIA and OpenAI had broken down. The current deal stands closer to 20 billion being invested into OpenAI, a far cry from the original 100 billion. Separately, NVIDIA has been hedging its bets elsewhere with a 10 billion dollar deal with OpenAI competitor Anthropic. This is part of a larger trend in the world of AI, where companies in the space are making large investments in each other to fund the capital-intensive industry. This circular investing has clouded the current investment picture, making it seem like there is more money in the industry than there actually is.
