I have the app running on my phone with the ring that you originally recommended in the article, and it seems to connect up just fine. One of my main questions is about HR and SPO are these readings only done on a manual basis or is the app/ring scheduled to check these readings throughout the day?

That is great! Please give as much feedback as you can! The HR and SpO2 are measured every 30 minutes by the ring itself and whenever you open the app (pull down) it syncs with the ring and get's all the data. You can also trigger a spot reading when you click on the HR or the SpO2 tile on the today or vital pages - that takes a live measurement!

There is a way to also change the frequency of the measurements (from 30 minutes default), but I haven't gotten around reverse engineering that part of the protocol - so that is not possible with the app right now.

I bought the same ring from your doc link but I am not seeing any automatic testing being synced up.

Interesting. Did you also test with the original app of the ring (Jring)? If yes, can you make sure the ring is not paired there? If no, can you test and update here if it works with the original app.

I have not downloaded the original app. But I can test to confirm.

Tested with the original app and confirmed it did run the heart rate automatically, so I went ahead and performed the unbind from the original app and now connected it back to PulseLoop to see if maybe it needs that initial setup with the original app.

Did this help? Also in the app try to pull down (to trigger the sync with the ring).

Looks like the ring is now running HR tests every 15 minutes like I set in the original app. So, unless that setting change is implemented in PulseLoop it would be required to configure ring in original app before using PulseLoop.

Okay, this is really good information. I never realized that the command is needed for setting up the ring. I will update the README with the caveat that the original app is required for getting started. I will also work on trying to sniff what data the app sends during setup and add that in our app. Please keep using the app and updating (with new issues) us with your feedback on the app.

Butting in with a user request -- is there a way to make it read HR every minute? Pretty sure FitBit (which I'm trying to move away from) does so.

Yes, there is a way. There is command to change the frequency of measurements but I haven't gotten around figuring it out for the 56ff rings. I have it implemented for the Colmi rings. For now I would recommend to change the frequency in the Jring app and that should increase the resolution of the data on Pulse Loop.
