Many older IRC clients won't cooperate with the bridge

For instance, connecting CGI:IRC to the bridge results in the USER command failing (invalid number of parameters), and then the PASS command failing directly afterwards (not logged in). From there, I have no way to do basically anything. Most of the standard commands do not work or don't work as they would on most IRC servers, and even /help doesn't appear to work.

We don't support the PASS command, authentication requires SASL.

Ah, not supporting the PASS command may be the issue then. You should consider supporting it for compatibility with non-SASL clients.

SASL has been the de facto standard for logins for a decade now. If your client still doesn't support it, you should consider switching to a more up-to-date product.

I think that forbidding older clients to log in is in defiance of this project's namesake. Most IRC networks support /PASS still because there are people using clients from 2004 who have them "set up the way they like it".
