This is a very sensical, sensible usability issue. This customizability isn't "just cosmetic" or a fickle thing, it helps me organize my things, access them quicker, and in general hey maybe I should be able to be in control of how my system looks.
Is it that much of a technical limitation? It clearly existed before. I don't even need something wild, I am well satisfied to be able to change from only a list of symbolic icons, but to be given that option. Not everything in my bookmarks is simply a folder. Having to read through it everytime adds friction. This is such a barebones DUH feature to have.
I am perplexed sometimes at the obvious UX faux-pas's of FOSS.
