Experimental bootc image

This may not be of any interest to anyone, but as an experiment I've created a rakuos-cosmic bootc image (based on Fedora 44) at ghcr.io/whelanh/rakuos-cosmic-nvidia:latest (created from combined forks at https://github.com/whelanh/rakuos-combined).

This was motivated because I could not get the iso to install on my Dell laptop (I think because of internet issues), so I was curious about just re-basing from the Kinoite system that was on the laptop.

The important functionality seems to work (RakuOS software center, welcome app, ability to install packages using dnf etc.). There's a little weirdness on displaying icons of apps I've installed in the lower dock (so my image may have missed something that makes this work in terms of "maintained" apps in the desktop database).

I also tried allowing for a Rawhide base, but I believe the negativo17 packages for Nvidia are missing for Rawhide, so the Nvidia version wouldn't build if the base is Rawhide.

Yea looking at the repo not sure was going wrong with the icons as you seem to have the "secret" sauce from the /usr/libexec/rakuos overlay scripts. But RakuOS is moving to GitLab as the project got sponsored by GitLab so in the process of migrating all the images and software over before sending out updates to transition everyone over to pulling image updates from gitlab. I will be starting a nightly Rawhide branch in next couple days once I have all the plumbing in place as the tooling on Gitlab is out this world when you have access to their full suite like the project has now since the sponsorship

Alright got all desktop images to build on rawhide with nvidia. building updates for Main (Stable) and Staging now. prob be 30-45 mins before everything is done if you aren't on the gitlab images yet you may have to update twice to see it

I'm probably doing something wrong, but I don't see a rawhide version in RakuOS Software/System. My choices still seem to be Stable or Staging. I am on the gitlab.com image dated 20260420.

No you not doing nothing wrong I screwed up and had the initial rebuild on copr pull the old sources from github LOL got new rawhide build going then ya can just run sudo bootc switch registry.gitlab.com/rakuos/images/rakuos-cosmic/nvidia:rawhide to swap directly if ya want

Ha, ha....I had just found the image on gitlab and was about to do the bootc switch command. You beat me! I'm looking at the rpm-ostree db diff and I can see it's a nice update.

On a separate note (and I imagine it's on your to do list), but I think there is still a boot issue for someone traveling to an environment where they don't have wifi internet already set up. I happened to be in a different building with a different internet and could not boot (got stuck at rakuos-overlay-sync.service again). I was able to do my "systemd.mask=rakuos-overlay-sync.service" trick again to at least boot and connect to the new internet so I could reboot normally. You have a lot on your plate I know....not trying to add more!

I was able to update to Rawhide. However none of my overlay apps were there (I am not worried about this....just reporting it). The journalctl indicates the overlay-sync service failed due to a missing library:

just fixed it and about to push to Stable as both the rawhide and staging repos are in choas right now because I think they getting ready to release 44 and bump 45. I will keep trying through the day to rebuild both

Your recent fix worked perfectly. I applied the "hotfix", rebooted, and have all my overlays back.

yep just an edge case I didn't think of haha. but adding the error catch and reading what plugins missing to delete the conf files best way to handle that. but most likely what happened is something you installed into your overlay before depended on that dnf plugin thus it wasn't there when the overlay got wiped for rebuild on reboot. and looking at your screenshot reminds me I need to apply the RakuOS ascii text logo haha

the no internet fix should be in overlay-sync now too as I added that this morning and what that does is any dnf install command in the sync script gets skipped over if the internet check fails and then it sends you to desktop.. I prob gona add a qued notification to it so once on desktop it will say to check your connection or something then reboot to finish the sync properly
