Migrating to NixOS org

Hello, This is lassulus from the NixOS foundation/github org owners.

We would like to migrate this repo (and the server) into the NixOS org. Main reason is, that we think it is critical infrastructure for nixpkgs, our biggest and most important repository. nix-community depends a lot on nixpkgs and having nixpkgs depend on nix-community creates a circular dependency. And I don't like circular dependencies :)

This was already brought up to the SC and can be just implemented from our side. Happy to hear opinions from @nix-community/admin about this. From our side nothing should be blocking this

Confirming what @Lassulus is saying, the SC has voted in favor of moving this repository to the NixOS org.

I've opened a PR that removes all of nixpkgs-update from the infra repo so you can see the relevant code: nix-community/infra#2152

I don't think migration loses any info around git stuff itself, issues, pull requests, etc.

It's more that my PRs will add comments with nix-community/nixpkgs-update URLs that would have to be edited to NixOS/nixpkgs-update URLs, and I didn't want to complicate anything in flight.

Hi all. I'm picking this back up, and sorry for the long quiet stretch since April.

Two things to confirm from the Steering Committee side:

1. The SC vote in favor is now recorded in our public vote log. Sorry for the administrative failure here.
2. I've recently come on as a NixOS org owner, so I can actually drive the GitHub-side transfer rather than leaving it stuck waiting on "someone with org ownership."

Huge thanks to @zowoq and the nix-community admins for the prep already done.

I see the tracking issue the infra removal PR (#2152), and the nixpkgs-update changes in #523. That's most of the hard part scoped already.

It looks like the transfer splits into two pieces:

• The GitHub repo needs a NixOS org owner to execute the transfer. I can take this on.
• The server. This is the infra/nix-community piece. What do you need from the Foundation to hand this off (or for us to stand up a replacement), and is there anything that has to land before the repo move?

Proposed next steps: let's settle the ordering (repo first vs. server first, and whether #523 / #2152 should merge before or after the transfer).

I'm on Zulip and I think so are all of you? @zowoq need an invite? That's likely the best way to coordinate this.

Server first, no point in moving the repos out of this org while the instance is still managed here. Moving the repos is trivial work anyway.
