So recently on distrowatch, a new manjaro release was announced. I downloaded the
KDE version first.
The first odd thing was that I picked the proprietary NVIDIA in the start-up boot message that
is shown; this one works well for my 730 GeForce; I know this due to having already installed
manjaro in the past, and it worked fine.
After installation I suddenly had nouveau? Anyway, this is a side comment - I am just a bit
confused because "dmesg" shows nouveau, but to the best of my recollection, I picked
the proprietary driver, so I was also expecting the proprietary driver after installation.
Perhaps this could be made clear in the installer, or perhaps during the installer an
additional option could be shown, where people could pick this or that driver instead.
That way I could also ensure that proprietary driver is used. Right now I seem to have
the open source driver, which unfortunately simply works less well for my current setup,
it has tons of glitches, whereas the proprietary driver has no glitches as far as I can
tell.
Manjaro KDE from the Live USB started, but the bottom pane never showed up.
I then started konsole (somehow I was able to open a start menu with another
key combination) and started the ... calamares something installer from the
commandline - but it never started. No error message was shown.
Something must have been broken here. I use a very ultra-wide monitor,
and many things don't work well.
I then picked the xfce installer instead, and everything went fine there.
So the TL;DR here is: something is strange with the KDE installer, the
bottom pane never showed up.
For comparison: I installed KDE via the older manjaro release and it went
fine, the bottom pane showed up. No clue what the issue was here.
(By the way, that older .iso file had a problem with the installer where
it could not format my hdd; the new one from a few days ago worked
fine, so there is improvement. It would be nice if the manjaro team
could collectively gather such issues though - that way we can all
rely on manjaro becoming better rathern than have some odd regressions.
The regression here may have to do with nouveau; it would be nice if we
would have a simple way to switch between the two. I prefer the propriertary
one because I have fewer issues with my current card; on an older computer
I don't have these problems so this really has a lot to do with nvidia.)
