Controlling current activity over `Authorized Apps` menu's permission

Hello,

Would it be possible to control vscode's current activity through Authorized Apps -> Update your current activity permission? It can be a potential workaround to flatpak issues with Discord RPC.

I believe this should work with discord rpc with flatpak stuff? It is working for me without having to change anything from what i can remember. I am running arch linux with both vscode and discord in flatpaks

Maybe try this and see if that helps you?

We can look at adding this if it helps with compatibility but I assume this is using a linux version of premid have only used premid on windows didnt know they also had a linux thing for it

I am also a little confused the screenshot you show is a android device and i have just looked and can only find a vscode extension for premid and not linux app? Can I seek some clarification on what your setup is and what you are trying to suggest?

Default rich presence works with flatpak from the comment you've linked, but is a bit tricky.

premid is connecting through web browser extension -> server side premid backend and talks to discord, after oauth2 autorization.

I was on phone while creating the issue, but the authorized apps are displayed across all discord clients. Sorry about that!

Okay so to recreate the environment you are wanting:

1. install something like on whatever os you are on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/premid
2. install the premid vscode extension (https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Recodive.premid-pmd)
3. Make vscord able to send activity to the pmd extension or the desktop client?

pmd extension is archived so i assume would be sending it to the desktop client

what I meant is possibly making this vscord extension ask the end user for discord developer app credentials with scope for updating current activity, spawn a temporary HTTP server (if needed) for oauth2 authorization and then updating the current activity through HTTPS requests / REST API to discord site.

Authorized apps dont have permission to set the users activity unless that has changed but i cant find anything on it?

can you link the discord api docs you are referencing for this?

Ahh sorry now i am tracking. premid has the perm. Im pretty sure it must be through the social sdk ill have a look at the discord docs and see if there is a way we can do it from there but from memory i think their was some issue with it.

Okay i found the docs for it. It does seem possible but would require a massive change within how this currently is working maybe with the #402 we can see if we can add some type of "choose the rpc method" and have a class that is for the legacy rpc and setup another one for the new social sdk stuff @xhayper thoughts?

If it requires hosting a server im not sure if we will be able to do that in a sense or have some way of doing this maybe we allow the user to specify this so they can set it up or something. I would have to dig deeper into how this works first tho

It does seem like their is a "public client" type for this https://discord.com/developers/docs/discord-social-sdk/core-concepts/oauth2-scopes#oauth2-client-types but again not sure the limitations how setting the rpc and that works as you would think that would only be available if you are confirmed the game. the SDK is also in c++ so we will have to find a javscript alternative or make one

with oauth you can be set as a "public client" which allows your app to not have a backend server but im not sure how that would work as i doubt discord will allow anyone to set anyones rpc if it is on public so I would assume that part would only be enabled for "private" oauth clients

Looking at this more and more I dont think it would be possible to use the Social SDK the fact that it is in c++ would be we have to preterite most the sdk and keep up with any changes with it. I cant find anyone that has done this to js or ts. Maybe we only have to implement the discord rpc section of this however I still think it would require us hosting some type of proxy server to send everyone's presences to because I dont think we will be able to do it client side only.

They do send it to a api so the c++ stuff maybe be their

I've checked the discord developers's app options and at https://discord.com/developers/applications -> new app -> Oauth2 and there's an option to set a redirect URL to any website (including localhost) and then generate the authorization link with rpc.activities.write.

There's some kind of example in JS for RPC which can utilize a websocket, at https://github.com/discordjs/RPC but not sure if it's up to date.

don't know how would it workout from the code side but the end user would have to create an app for themself and pass the Client ID & Client secret to the vscord.

From what i can tell of that it is using the same way that we currently do it in vscord. It is using local ipc or local websockets so it wouldn't be using any oauth2 stuff
