add more complete tests for boundary condition API

#155 adds some testing for boundary conditions API to hit a hitherto untested codepath which was causing problems on certain platforms.

More thorough boundary conditions testing, especially to verify mathematical behavior, should be added to the tests. Perhaps we could compare a few beam bending analytic solutions? We should probably also verify extrapolate and periodic behavior.
