Is there any way to access the return code of a stubbed command? That would be a useful feature, for instance stubbing exit and still checking the exit value.

Actually, maybe just add an example showing stub_and_eval in practice

my_exit() { rc="$@"; echo "exit $rc"; return $rc }
stub_and_eval exit 'my_exit $@'
