JAX version not available for intel macs?

Hi,

first of all, congratulations for the 1.0.0 release, it looks great!

I have tried to go through the installation, by running "uv sync --group test", but I get an error message saying that jaxlib (v0.9.2) does not have a wheel for intel macs. Is this correct, and does this mean that one cannot actually run pymdp on such systems?

Hi @gpagnon , thanks for the flagging this.

Unfortunately recent jaxlib releases no longer provide Intel-macOS wheels (dropped on 0.5.0 release on in Jan 2025). However, that does not mean pymdp itself is unusable on Intel Macs. I checked that pymdp still "works" (just constructed a simple Agent construction and running of the active inference functions, like state inference, planning, and action sampling) with the last Intel-macOS-compatible JAX line (jax==0.4.38, jaxlib==0.4.38). The failing part is our current uv sync --group test workflow, which resolves newer wheel-only dependencies on Intel macOS, probably because the test dependency resolves to newer releases of JAX due to dependencies on numpyro/ pybefit. I will add an Issue to add Intel-Mac installation guidance or explicit support for this

It also appears they have officially documented this in JAX's installation guide, which only mentioned Apple ARM-based systems as supported on the CPU backend: https://docs.jax.dev/en/latest/installation.html#install-cpu
