Variable Description: Correlation of dose and response for nanomaterials toxicity assessment requires information on the amount of the applied dose of nanomaterial that has been internalised by a cell population (or per specific cell) and is dependent on a number of factors including the exposure time, the particle density (i.e., whether settling occurs and thus the distribution of particles in the medium is non-homogeneous affecting the local concentration at the cell surface) etc.

Almost agree, but would maybe go for "number per volume"

A cell is something 3-dimensional and the description says "internalized", so being part of the cell.
I would not know what the area would be but I have a clue what the reference volume would be.

However, I have to admit that the title says "per cell area", so I'm a bit confused - likely I would need to go back to some expert in the field for this.

This looks really good - one minor caveat is that the origin of the cell can be human, rodent (rat / mouse / hamster), fish etc, in this case it does not specify the cell origin.

In terms of the area - in this case it is the cell surface area - the cells are grown in a plate (e.g. 96 well) and assumed 70-80 % confluence (coverage of the well surface) at the time of exposure , so the cell surface area (in cm2) is the area of the bottom of the well essentially.

For the property then, it should be particle number per cell surface area - the assumption is that it attached at the surface it becomes internalised - either via a receptor mediated process or via cell membrane turnover.

we can quantify an internalisd dose, after washing the cell surface to remove any losely attached non-internalised particles, and that would be the actual internalised dose - it is still normalised by the available surface area as internaliseation can only occur via this "exposed" surface.

@IseultLynch particle number per cell surface area is the variable, whereas the property is number per area; particle is the OoI and cell surface the matrix. Would you agree with this?
