In an effort to more intuitively understand the details of these models and how to use them, I was playing with fitting photometry of standard stars as that is the simplest test case. I fit the photometry with bands SDSS-u to 2MASS-Ks to stars of known spectral type, distance, and rough Av and then checked to see if the best fit models fall in the right places on an HR diagram. Answer: sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
Along the way, I made an HR diagram of the stellar models (s---s-i) and I am puzzled by the result. So I'm hoping you can shed light on this. The attached plot, and notebook to create it, shows (Luminosity,Temperature) phase space completely filled, whereas I was expecting something that look more like a traditional HR diagram, with pre-main sequence, main sequence, giant branch, etc. Can you explain why my expectations are incorrect?
A common misclassification in the fitting was e.g. a spectral type B main sequence star with high extinction gets "best-fit" by a G or K giant with near zero extinction. With the (L,T) phase space filled, one can see how this could happen.
