compile fails with missing matsim dependencies

Using a stock ubuntu 24.04 (OpenJDK 21.0.8, Maven 3.8.7) I get the following error when running mvn compile on a fresh checkout:
[ERROR] .../experimental/src/main/java/stockholm/wum/WUMProductionRunner.java:[30,36] package org.matsim.contrib.newgreedo does not exist
