Fix lint errors across the repository

Currently the lint is checked on the diff in a PR. There are several lint issues currently in the existing codebase which can be fixed in a phased manner.

• errcheck: 50
• staticcheck: 50
• unused: 2

@mihaimaruseac @mlieberman85 there are several lint issues of type errcheck and staticcheck across the repository. What do you think is the best way to resolve this ?

Resolving each one of these is a change across several files, but they are easy fixes.
