when I explain how the current wrapper works and Alex says "why not just split the block" and, live in front of everyone, I stumble and say "holy cow I should just split the block internally and get sample accurate automation".

"We could just do that here as well. In fact we should".

This has now been implemented with #78, using some compile-time options. I think I'll leave this issue open for now in case folks have any questions or concerns.
