Bug summary

It looks like the the quote and "show more" blocks width is not fixed but changes based on the word wrapping.

Maybe it's feature, but I'd like to see it's fixed.

Steps to reproduce

1. Open a room with replies and messages with "Show more" buttons

Expected behavior

Those rectangles should have the same width.

Actual behavior

They are not fixed, but it seems it's decided based on word wrapping.

A couple of things going on here:

Bubble widths are content-driven by design. Each bubble shrinks to fit its wrapped text (capped at the timeline's max-width setting). Element, Telegram, iMessage, etc. all behave this way. The "Show more" bar and reply-quote preview inside a bubble already stretch to fill that bubble's width, but since adjacent bubbles can have different widths (different word-wrap), those inner elements end up at different widths too. That's the variability you're seeing.

Long ago, I've experimented with forcing all bubbles to a fixed width (e.g. min == max == 80% of the timeline). It looked excessively ugly for short messages: a one-word "Hi!" rendering as a giant near-empty bubble. So I gave up on it.

If you've spotted the "Show more" bar actually overflowing past its bubble's right edge (rather than just being narrower than a neighboring bubble), please share an uncropped screenshot. That would be a separate bug worth fixing.
