+# Playwright UI Test Suite — Design Spec
+

+## Goals
+
+- **Regression safety net:** Tests run in CI and block merges if they fail.
+- **Living documentation:** `test.describe` / `test` names read as a behavioral spec — future contributors (human or AI) can understand expected behavior by reading the test tree.
+
+## Architecture
+
+One shared FastAPI process, one shared SQLite test DB, one Next.js process. The full request path (browser → Next.js proxy → FastAPI) is exercised on every test, matching production behavior.

+## Server Startup
+
+**`global-setup.ts`**
+- Spawns `venv/bin/uvicorn src.main:app --port 8182` from the project root with `DB_FILE` set to the test DB path.
+- Polls `GET http://localhost:8182/` until it returns 200 (max 30 s).
+- Writes the process PID to `/tmp/playwright-backend.pid`.
+
+**`playwright.config.ts` `webServer`**
+- Command: `BACKEND_URL=http://localhost:8182 npm run dev`
+- Port: 3000
+- `reuseExistingServer: !process.env.CI` — locally skips Next.js startup if port 3000 is already live.
+
+**`global-teardown.ts`**
+- Reads PID from `/tmp/playwright-backend.pid` and kills the uvicorn process.
+- Test DB is left in place locally (harmless growth); in CI the runner is ephemeral.
+

+## Test Isolation
+
+Each `test.describe` block derives a unique student ID from the spec filename and describe-block name (e.g., `test-feedback-edit-a3f2`). All writes are scoped to that student, so describe blocks are fully independent and can run in parallel. No `afterAll` teardown is needed.

+
+Typed wrappers that call the FastAPI backend directly using Playwright's `request` context (not the browser). Used in `beforeAll` blocks.

+
+### `window.open` interactions
+
+"Print All" and worksheet download buttons use `window.open()`. Tests capture the new tab via:

Subject: [PATCH 19/20] fix: resolve all 41 Playwright E2E test failures

- Add has_feedback/feedback_completed_at to WeeklyPacketSummary so the
  plans page correctly shows "Edit Feedback" vs "Provide Feedback"
- Fix 204 No Content proxy crash in Next.js catch-all route
- Reset test DB on each run (delete + recreate) so stale data can't
  cause test pollution across runs
- Kill any existing backend on port 8182 before starting fresh test
  backend, preventing old code from serving tests
- Fix strict mode violations in test selectors (getByRole with exact
  match, scope Mathematics to studentCard, Close button exact match)
- Remove .catch(() => {}) on createStudent calls so failures surface
  instead of creating orphan packets without a student_profiles row
- Use unique student name in create-student test to avoid cross-run
  collisions when DB reset fails
- Add label/id linkage to Input component for getByLabel locators
- Add role=dialog/aria-modal to Modal component for getByRole locators

Subject: [PATCH 20/20] ci: add Playwright E2E job to CI workflow

Adds an e2e-tests job that runs on every PR and push to main. The job:
- Creates a Python venv and installs backend dependencies (uvicorn, etc.)
- Installs Node dependencies and Playwright's chromium browser
- Runs all 41 E2E tests via `npm run test:e2e`
- Uploads the Playwright HTML report as an artifact on failure

CI=true triggers stricter Playwright config: forbidOnly, retries=1,
reuseExistingServer=false (always starts a fresh Next.js dev server).
