Piper support seems to have been added a year ago #996

There is a plenty of people trying to use Speech Dispatcher with Piper with homemade solutions

• ArchWiki
• Pied
• me on GitLab

The last release 0.12.1 seems to not include it

When will be the next release ?

(No pressure, there is no need to rush)

I'm always amazed how much people can spend efforts in various place except where it will be most effective long-term-wise... Since the cxxpiper module was integrated, my comments in #996 have been completely unanswered. Maybe I should have not actually integrated it, so my concerns get taken into account rather than ignored. I have now made it an explicit request on #1092, but I wonder when somebody will actually do anything about it...

People have to understand that me being maintainer of speechd doesn't mean that I magically have the time to fix everything.

my comments in #996 have been completely unanswered

The initial contributor seems to have no more activities on GitHub, no linked website where we can see if they are still active on the internet

I don't know for the others :

• I am not fluent with CPP
• I don't really know how Piper works, i am just hacking around with it
• I currently can't package the latest version of SpeechD
  • when i tried, Nix took all my remaining space on my storage by compiling every dependency

That why it is currently simpler for me to tinker with some shell scripts and configuration than contributing directly to upstream

I was hopping a new release will come, so the package could be updated (on Nix), then i will be able to test and use it and gives feedbacks / open issues / open PR

From my point of view, now that it have been merged since a while, releasing a newer version will give spotlight on Piper with SpeechD and maybe more people would be willing to contribute instead of reinventing the wheel in their side

But then we have a chicken & egg issue. As #1024 reports, there are issues. I tried to run piper, and it just always crashed as described in the bug, so I can't even actually say it would work at all...

I succeeded to build the latest version https://github.com/pinage404/nixpkgs/blob/speechd-upgrade/pkgs/by-name/sp/speechd/package.nix (i rebased the branch on an older nixpkgs to avoid rebuilding every dependency)

I'm still trying to build with piper https://github.com/pinage404/nixpkgs/blob/speechd-with-piper/pkgs/by-name/sp/speechd/package.nix

While i didn't succeed, i won't be able to test it to provides feedbacks
