Combine with volume icon?

This is a real problem for me so I look forward to seeing how well you've solved it. Thank you!

To minimize icon sprawl, any chance you could incorporate the functionality of the system volume icon into this, so I could remove the system one, and there would be one icon to show both the mute/non-mute state as well as the output device, and dropping it down would give you the combined functionality of both icons?

I'd like to do that, but there are a few problems:

• I don't know how to get the name of some devices. For instance the Apple menu shows monitor with their full name/model. I haven't figured out how to do that. The API I use doesn't seem to work that way.
• If there's an Apple TV around, the volume menu will show that and allow you to connect. No idea how to do that.
• The user experience could be better if I could automatically hide/unhide the system volume icon. While it's not difficult to do, I cannot do it in a sandboxed app (i.e. it's not available for Mac App Store apps).

The last one would be cool but I don’t think it’s at all needed. I use iStat Menus and it doesn’t do that either. All the others - I agree, but one step at a time is good enough. The device names do seem to be the critical one. Thanks! Uri
