[FEATURE] make standard and crux text output a configuration choice instead of a compile flag

For me as a user, it seems strange that a different output format is only available if I compile the software with specific flags instead of changing a configuration. After all, Comet has already various output formats and configuration settings. Adding one more would seem reasonable to me for the benefit of not requiring different compile flags.
