When I chat with a character I created, and the chat goes on for a certain length, my character generates a new chat response in a very short time and then the model returns an empty message. This happens with almost every character I chat with for a long time, preventing me from having any further conversations with them.

So is this a bug?

Likely not, I, too get an occasional "returned empty message" failure. Can you tell me which model you're running, post screens of your settings, or paste the contents of settings.json, and optionally a screenshot/paste of the console output from the model. (You only need to post from the settings-tree down, presumably the response will be [] blank, however there is a very slim chance the model did feed a full token response but as you or someone other than the character of the card. (The Free Name Mode setting can cause this when used with single persona cards in a one-on-one chat.)

I'm using Google Colab on the web: https://colab.research.google.com/github/lostruins/koboldcpp/blob/concedo/colab.ipynb. I didn't change any of the models, only the ContextSize. However, the same error occurs when I use a locally deployed model.

For science... Can you swap to Horde... and pick...

And then see what it does? If you're using the default settings for the colab, free name mode is off.
