Support for LIMIT wasn't added to IRIS until 2025.1 Release Notes

For versions less than that, would it be possible to use TOP instead?

Yeap it should be possible. I believe you would need to change this method in the driver:

(defmethod sql-jdbc.sync/fallback-metadata-query :iris-jdbc
  [_ _db-name schema table]
  ;; return a vector of one or more SQL strings to probe column metadata
  [(format "SELECT * FROM %s.%s WHERE 1=0 LIMIT 0"
           schema
           table)])

and recompile it.
