It's pretty straightforward and documentation is appt on.. if it doesn't work at first for you and you followed the instructions it's probably because you are trying to use the rpi onboard wlan that doesn't support monitor mode.

Try connecting a USB wifi adapter that supports monitor mode and see if that solves your issue.

For me the pwnagotchi screen just flashes and fails to boot

Yes. It shows the screen initially but keeps rebooting.

For me it was because it was trying to use a non existent wifi adapter.

Try connecting a USB wifi dongle and it should work.
