Canis Canem Edit (Bully PAL) - DOF Patch isn't working when reaching Winter map (Ghosting Effect is back) #747

Description

@JealousOutmeal9

Hey there,

I've already mentionned this issue on the #public-testing Channel on Discord, and since I didn't get any solution, I chose to open a ticket directly on github.

My setup :
Windows 11 25H2 26200.8737
PCSX2 Version : Stable 2.6.3
PCSX2 Settings : Everything Default except Graphics > Rendering > Internal Rez set to 4x Native

Here's the whole story :
I'm currently playing Canis Canem Edit ; which is the PAL version of Bully (SLES-53561 / CRC: C78A495D), with the hardcoded patch "Disable Depth of Field" provided by PCSX2.
Things were perfect until I progressed into the game and reached the Third Chapter, which bring the same map but under snow.
And here, the game got really blurry and when moving there's a noticeable ghosting effect on NPCs etc...
"Kaiserin of the gays" who is from your Testers team on Discord, told me that this effect is also in GTA:SA, indeed it's the same effect but this effect wasn't present in my previous hours of gameplay, it appeared with this new Chapter (=map).

Some of your Discord testers team told me that the patches that are hardcoded are actually stored in the :
"PCSX2 install dir\resources\patches.zip".
Then I went there and found the patch for this game : SLES-53561_C78A495D.pnach
[Disable Depth of Field]
author=refraction
patch=1,EE,003DA2D4,word,5000021A //Skips DoF code block.

Then I searched over the internet and found the Gabominated github, the thing is, he has a DOF patch for this game which was updated 6 monthes ago :
[Disable DOF]
author=Gabominated
patch=1,EE,00634F68,word,AC6000DC

I made a pnach patch file for this game with the Gabominated values, enabled it in PCSX2 instead of the hardcoded one aaand SAME ISSUE.
2 differents patches for the same thing and both don't work on the WINTER MAP.

Then I dug more and found out that PCSX2 were providing "Half-Offset" patches back in the days and for some reasons stopped doing it.
Well.. with that info, I tried tweaking it .. and finally found the solution.

To properly fix the Ghosting effect on the Winter map :

  • On PCSX2 > Canis Canem Edit properties
  • Graphics > Rendering > Check the Manual Hardware Renderer Fixes box
  • From the 2 new tabs that appears in the Menu > Go to Upscaling Fixes tab
  • First Option : Half Pixel Offset, instead of "Use Global Settings [Off Default]", I changed it to "Normal (Vertex) and it solved the graphical issue.
    And as a bonus, this setting doesn't affect at all the default map / spring map (I've tested it..).

Screenshots :
WS+DOF patch (refraction), my fix is not applied (Ghost effect is here) : https://ibb.co/JRW7ZWGF
WS+DOF patch (refraction), my fix got applied (No more Ghost effect) : https://ibb.co/QFnfJbqM

If you guys need the proper files to test it by yourself...
I had to restart the game from the beginning and rush it for 3 hours, just to gather those files.. Yeah I'm motivated, you can tell.
https://mega.nz/folder/JYwzXDgQ#W8_08sPgRXwKAhPM4tukBw (SaveStates, Memcards (Pick the First), Cheats I use, Dumps)

How I made my tests :
The 2 first files are at the beginning of the game, when I could actually move my char.
The 2 other ones are when I reached the Chapter 3, on the winter map.

Each one are in 2 versions : no patch AND with WS+DOF (refraction) patches

Cheers.
