I just came across your video and this is a really fun concept!
I do think you could probably store larger files if you were willing to use more then 16 different blocks. Minecraft has hundreds of solid blocks, after all.
Even just using Wool + Concrete + Terracotta, we get to 48. We can choose 16 more blocks (stone variants maybe) to get to 64 for 4x the storage density.
I'm aware this project isn't active but, this was on my mind after watching and I wanted to mention it.
