Hi Emilio,
Can you tell me what version of PyKOB & MKOB you are using? If you are
starting it in a terminal window, it should print both versions when it
starts. I might ask you to increase the logging level and send me a log,
but we'll see.
Also, what serial connection are you using? In other words, does your
system have an actual serial port or are you using a serial-to-usb cable?
If USB, what cable is it?
Sorry for so many questions, but hopefully we can get you running without
too many back-and-forths.

Hi Emilio,
Thanks for the info. I have Devian 12 on an IBM Thinkpad as well (one of
multiple systems). One difference is that I don't have that USB-Serial
converter/cable, but hopefully I can get you running shortly.
I'm going to ask that you increase the logging level and capture a log for
me. To increase the log level, go into Preferences and go to the Advanced
tab. At the bottom, increase the level to '3'.
Save that configuration.
Run MKOB and 'tee' the output into a file (you should see a lot more output
in the terminal). Cause the error and then close MKOB and send me the file.
Sorry you are having problems.

Hi,
Thanks for that. Not sure why the 'tee' didn't get all the output.
The configuration you provided might not be the right one, because it has:
logging_level=0
yet the output is showing output levels up to '3' (as I requested).
The configuration it is using is: /home/emilio/.pykob/config2-emilio.ini
Anyway... I don't see the serial error (exception) in the output.
It appears to run and then be shut down: 2026-05-30 13:28:14 DEBUG[1]:
MKOBWindow._on_app_destoy triggered.
Does it run correctly if you don't use the interface and use the system
sound? If so, can you try using the system sound (don't enable the sounder)
and the key, and see what happens?
Thanks,
-Ed

Hi Emilio,
Thank you for the video. I don't understand why the error doesn't show up
in the log. Can you try redirecting stderr to stdout and capture that?
Also, thanks for letting me know that the sounder works as long as you
don't open the key.
So to verify, it is working okay (physical sounder sounds code if connected
to a wire or you enter something in the sender text box), and then you open
the key and it gets the error and exits?
Unfortunately, the error numbers from the Linux I/O are not very specific.
Especially 'Errno 5', just means that the system lost contact with the
connected device. You probably don't have a different USB-Serial cable, or
I would ask you to try that.
As another experiment, can you try starting with the key open? Of course,
with it open the sounder won't sound (since you have a LOOP circuit), but I
would be interested if it runs, and then what happens if you close it.
I'm sorry that you are having problems. I'm sure we can get it working.

Hi Emilio,
Thank you for the extended video. I was going to ask if it is able to
reconnect, and your video demonstrates that it does.
As for your question about interface... I make an interface that is in use
at a number of museums. I have a couple of those that I use on my machines
(Linux, Windows, and Mac). I also have one that I made on a perfboard using
the save schematic you used. For it I use an FTDI USB-Serial cable. The
interfaces that I supply to museums use an FTDI chip that performs the same
operation as the USB-Serial cable.
Here is a link to the manual for my interface:
https://github.com/MorseKOB/MuKOB/blob/main/docs/Ref-Manual-KSIF-MkV.pdf
(You need to click 'more pages' at the bottom a few times to get through
the whole thing. Or download it and view it locally.)
Back to your problem... The one thing you might try is a TVS diode (or a
pair of 10V zeners CtoC); first across J2 (in the schematic on the
webpage). If that doesn't work, then try one between J1 P4&P6 and one
between P3&P6.
The other thing would be to try an FTDI USB-Serial cable, as I have used
them with success with that interface and I know others that have as well.
I'm really sorry that you are having problems with your setup. I added the
connection retry logic to MKOB/PyKOB to assist with a few museums that
found that the interface would occasionally drop off overnight, and it was
causing them to need to restart MKOB. But it shouldn't drop out after just
a character or two, as it is with you.

Hi Ed I remember have a docker for the Thinkpad X60s and built in a serial conector, make a test and the MKOB.py run perfect!! so the problem is this kind of adapter serial to USB for some reason no send any input in the DSR pin!!! Next days made a serial cable extension and i can work with the (physical) KOB. Thanks for your help. |

Hi Emilio,
I'm glad you were able to try a different option. You say about a docker
for the Thinkpad with the serial connector. Does that Thinkpad use Windows?
If so, there is a Windows installer for the whole MKOB Suite. You can get
it here: https://www.aesilky.com/morse
Scroll down to where it says: Download MKOB Suite 4.6.0 Installer for Win64
As I mentioned, I have had good luck with the FTDI USB-Serial cables.

Hi Ed, Is the same Thinpad X60s with Debian 12 only put the docker: Have a serial connector, test with this and the MKOB.py work perfect. So the problem was the another usb-serial adapter for some reason the pin DTR does not recognize HIGH or LOW values from physical Key. thanks and hope hear you soon in the wire 11

<<< This message is from Chris Hausler, who was having problems posting in this discussion >>> I have used the circuit as published on the MorseKOB web site for some years. I tried to send him a couple of photos of a working set-up with a practice KOB similar to his with some suggestions. The configuration shown uses a 5 Ohm sounder and I don't know whether his is a 4 to 5 Ohm or a 20 Ohm (the most likely values). In the photo of mine you can see a series 3.9 Ohm metal film resistor and the wall wart power brick is set to 3 volts (the "loop" is essentially implemented on the little 4 terminal barrier strip). When I have used a 20 Ohm practice KOB I change these values to 20 Ohms and 6 volts which I've used successfully with such configurations. The series resistor both reduces the inductive time constant but particularly with these small resistance higher current units it provides a current limiting feature in case one shorts out their KOB :-) The configuration shows the Chipi-X FTDI USB-to-Serial cable I've been using recently. Here's a link to a datasheet on this cable: https://ftdichip.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/DS_Chipi-X.pdf . That said, in previous times I have used a couple of earlier cables which used the Prolific driver also successfully. This configuration works successfully with both version MorseKOB version 2.5 and your Windows package (I have 4.4.0c) without any trouble. The second photo shows the bottom of the KOB with the TVS diode installed directly across the sounder coils. For 4 to 20 Ohm units I use the 7 volt Littelfuse SA7.0CA as recommended by Chip Morgan. Here's a link to the datasheet for these TVS diodes: I've purchased them from Mouser. Since he also tried the key only approach without success I'm wondering if the serial interface isn't energizing the DTR signal which is just being used as positive power by the op amp. Anyway, I have attached the two photos if you want to send them to him (as apparently I am unable to do so). |

Hi Ed, Thanks Mr. Chris for the help. Made a variable power supply now put 3 volts to the circuit and consume about 0.4 Amp, so i think no need the resistor for the coil. Attach a video with the MKOB.py running: https://sbj.edu.mx/videos/sounder-mkob-fix.mp4 Gracias por toda la ayuda

Excellent!
I'll leave the discussion open for now, that way others can post to it if
they have a question or comment.

I believe your problem has been solved by using a different serial interface. If that isn't the case, please feel free to reopen this discussion. |
