• See about replacing diagonal x-axis tic labels with horizontal ones. I think it will look better as long as the spacing is reasonable. Should this only be done when style = "large"?

About replacing the angled x-axis tick labels with horizontal ones: label rotation is defined in the custom_datetimeScale() function which is used by both the archival and non-archival versions of monitor plots. Are we okay with changing the output of the original non-archival plots?

As you identified, this is buried deep enough that changing it would affect everything.

Let's punt on this for now and at some future point refactor so that we have more flexible options for tweaking the labels.
