For example, a commitlint error could happen. In that case the user would want to edit the message and retry the commit.

This can be a bit tricky to implement. For example, an error will happen if a user aborts a commit by leaving an empty commit message. Only in this case, the user would not like to retry the commit even though an error occurred. For this reason, there must be a way to distinguish between different types of errors.

A commit is made once the user quits the buffer, so there's no way to keep the buffer open. The commit message should still be left in the .git/COMMIT_EDITMSG file, so it should be as simple as triggering a new commit. However, there has to be a way to distinguish between a new commit (commit message buffer should be cleared) and a retry commit (leave buffer as is).

Make sure there's an easy way to abort a retry commit since a user could get stuck repeatedly retrying a commit and might want to exit the commit window without making a commit. Currently, the only way to exit is by leaving an empty commit message, which is a bit inconvenient if the message isn't empty when the commit window opens.
