default android keyboard and indic keyboard crashes

This used to work earlier, but now I can only use fcitx5 which does not support Malayalam.

When I switch keyboard to any of these from fcitx5, no keyboard pops up. I have to start fcitx5 app again to switch back to fcitx5 to be able to type again.
