Web Share API on desktop

This feature works great on mobile devices, but on desktop (Chrome, Win 10), it does not offer the same experience.

If I understand correctly, this is because on desktop we don’t have installed the same app as on mobile.

I am aware that social sharing buttons are rarely used, but since they are already enabled, I would like to able to use them on desktop.

Can Web Share API be made optional for desktop?

Currently the webshare api is used on mobile devices, and the share buttons using website specific sharing pages are used on desktop.

Is there a way to detect if the webshare api is available on desktop? If so then I could switch to using that to check instead.
