Font is not properly rendered yet

I've tried this fork (Installing the AUR package) because I was checking the issues in the main kmscon repo and I see that one which suggest this fork could fix that bad rendered width for fonts but they are still cut in a half. That's my /etc/kmscon/kmscon.conf

Another question is that I'm not getting the terminal in a full size filling all the screen, I'd thought this might be because my laptop PC has a integrated display more little than my desktop display, but it is also happening in my desktop PC. So I guess I must setup the resolution in some way.

Does the font width issue happen to emojis only? What about other full-width characters? The shell itself is also involved in the width calculation and sometimes can get it wrong. To rule out that possibility, could you try to cat a text file containing those characters?

For the resolution, maybe you can try setting a different dpi for fonts

@Aetf thank you for your answer. I've set font-dpi=163 in the /etc/ksmcon/kmscon.conf file and restarted the service using systemctl but still is producing the same result as you can see

Hmm could you post kmstest.txt here so I can also test on it?

I currently have no other idea about the resolution. I suspect it has something to do with video backends, but I'm not familiar with that part of the code yet...

Any updates on this issue? I've faced with the same.

In short:

1. I have desktop pc with nvidia official driver (non opensource) and intel igpu
2. fb thought startup have efifb, no nvidia, since it's not supported in it
3. if I use hwaccel kmscon it uses resolution of efifb which is lower then native videocard in my case (1280x1024) and terminal have full size
4. if i don't use hwaccel kmsocn corectly setup the resolution which is native for this videocard/monitor 1980x1080 but the terminal size it seems the same which is used in efifb. Screen the same which shown in this Issue.

It seems issue when the virtual terminal try to init it have screen size the current fb and not new one after initialization of display. I'm not familiar deeply with code , so it's just my suspicions

How do you think it can be true?

and BTW my Hack Nerd font correctly renders without any issue, all icons shows correctly but terminal size is small

just now performed experiment - run system with different resolution for efifb (I did this by grub gfx resolution and payload setting).
In the first case resolution was 1280x1024 and from photo the terminal have been initialized with size which is very closed to it, but overall display init as 1980x1080
In the second case resolution was 1024x768 and from photo the terminal have been initialize with smaller size which have been in the first case and if you look more carefully the size is very closed to 1024x768 resolution, proportion is very closed

@Aetf @wyre Issue resolved, without code changes but recompile with additional parameter do not use fb device.
I've change prepare of PKGBUILD (kmscon-patched-git) to this one:

So what I've found...
Since I'm using nvidia driver which doesn't have support of fb drm my frame buffer during startup os using efifb kernel driver which init display with 1024x768 or 1280x1024 (depends how kernel start through grub2 or EFISTUB).In this case works logic of multiply monitors which described here https://github.com/Aetf/kmscon/blob/develop/src/kmscon_terminal.c#L207
So in my case I have 2 displays:
video_fbdev: activating display /dev/fb0 to 1024x768 32 bpp
video_drm2d: activating display 0x55e28b0d26f0 to 1920x1080
And by this logic choose the terminal by smallest size to correctly support dual monitor output.

So if compile the kmsoncon whiout fb which is not a problem in most cases everythink should works...
One big problem that there is no smooth switching beetween XServer and kmscon tty, display is always reintilization. As for me it's better then incorrect size of terminal.

About long term solution it seems need to rethink architecture of the multimonitor support

Nope, one of the symbol which is shown as two symbols broke my terminal rendering... In my case it's a "Hack Nerd Font Mono" font with git branch "\uf418" symbol.
Rollback to master.
And I have only one symbol which is not corectly render you can see at at last my vim screen shot the last symbol at left dark grey block - cirсle with S which is shown only by half. All my special character renders correclty at kmscon.
There is my config:

font-engine=pango
font-size=14
font-name=Hack Nerd Font Mono

Now that you mention it, I am remembering that I also had some breakage when first using that hack. I hacked around that by looking at COLORTERM environment variable and adjusting spacing as necessary.

WRT to the circle with an S not rendering properly, I figured out and fixed the problem.

Here is how things look for me:

right now I'm not even able to load kmscon in tty2, I've restarted several times the service and apparently is active and loaded, but tty2 is showing nothing but a black screen. I've got a Intel HD graphics 500 and I've tryied with xf86-video-intel and with modesetting and both have a similar behaviour.

I guess this might something to do with the new kernel version 5.x

@thesmiley1 I've tested your patch and apparently does work as expected ... but I'm still having problems with prompt rendering.

It doesn't fit in the available width. Why do you think could be this? And ... will be these improvements included into libtsm? 😊
