Is it easy to port Adept to new platforms?

For example, FreeBSD or Haiku OS? I'm just curious.

From what I understand, they both use ELF 64-bit binaries and are POSIX compliant (for the most part), so they'd probably be pretty easy to port to.

I think they'd just require a new target and __freebsd__ and __haiku__ predefined preprocessor values.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you might already be able to do something like this:

func main {
    printf('Hello World\n')
}

adept -c main.adept # On linux machine

gcc main.o -o main # On FreeBSD / Haiku

and have it work.

One example for such emulator is FreeBSD Linuxulator to allow running of binaries compiled for Linux on FreeBSD. But being an emulator, it's not perfect. Some binaries will work and some binaries will not work.

I know that the executable binary formats are different. All those extra things are added during linking. But I guess the syscalls would prevent object file compatibility. However, Adept does not directly emit syscalls, so it's hard to say.

Do they not use the C calling convention?

I might have to test compiling like that eventually just to make sure that it doesn't work.

Ideally of course you would just compile it on the actual target platform. I don't think it would be too hard to add.

Btw, keep in mind that they not only have different syscalls, they have different C runtimes, too.

Different C runtimes are okay, as the object file only says that some function named "printf" for example exists. Will have to test it out
